Anyone stayed through burning season in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @jlengstorf | 5yr  | 7 comments

Has anyone stayed through the burning season in Chiang Mai before? Iโ€™ve been here for a few days (I wasnโ€™t aware of burning season before I got here) and saw some reports about air quality that are a bit alarming. Does anyone have firsthand experience?

If youโ€™ve stayed through it before, did you notice any health effects? I know itโ€™s supposed to clear up soon-ish, so Iโ€™m mostly looking to find out if my concerns are paranoid or if I should be legitimately worried.

Thanks!

I was just there at the beginning of March (2015) and I didnโ€™t know about any Burning Season. Googling what it is now - โ€œFrom mid February to early April, Peaks in mid Marchโ€ - Iโ€™m a bit puzzled as I had no trouble with the heat at all. I have not seen anyone wearing any kind of mask.

Temperatures peaked at 36ยฐ C (97ยฐ F) in the afternoon, and sure that is hot, but quite bearable as the air is a lot cleaner up North than it is in, say, Bangkok. If you work during the day, with air condition, I think you should be fine.

Seeing Chiang Mai at the top of Nomad List now, Iโ€™m seriously considering living there for 6 - 12 months.

I stayed last year and Iโ€™ve got friends who are there now. Itโ€™s not unbearable so long as you donโ€™t have existing respiratory problems.

Having said that, I left this year. I left the second week of March after the first bad weekend, and wonโ€™t return till the second week of April.

If youโ€™re already bought tickets, youโ€™ll survive, but if you can avoid it you should.

For sure. We found out after we arrived (it hadnโ€™t occurred to me that air quality was something I needed to look into before this), and we have a place booked for six weeks. Right now itโ€™s looking like weโ€™ll probably just power through, staying indoors when itโ€™s really bad out. In the future, though, Iโ€™ll be sure to plan for a different time frame.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Itโ€™s kinda bad now, flights to Chiang Mai yesterday had to return to BKK due to poor visibility.

Iโ€™ve spent a few weeks during the burning season and it was awful. To be safe you need to wear a N95 mask (check out the 3M store on Wualai road) and you should avoid going outside if you can. You can buy a particle filter for your A/C unit at the Home Pro store near the CentralFestival shopping mall, that helps a lot with indoor air quality.

When I was there I used to spend most of my time at Maya, thereโ€™s a comfortable Starbucks there for work and a co-working space (CAMP). Thereโ€™s also a Fuji restaurant where you can get a great meal for 500-1000 bath.

I havenโ€™t, but am due to arrive there in May. From the recent news Iโ€™ve read, it looks like wearing a mask, and maximizing time spent under A/C for a while is a smart move.

Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been reading, too. Weโ€™ve been doing most of our working/eating indoors, and it hasnโ€™t bothered us much.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 3d 2 days ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad | 4mo 4 months ago | 1 comment

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard | 4mo 4 months ago | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone | 6mo 6 months ago | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack | 7mo 6 months ago | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce | 2yr 1 year ago | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Can anyone recommend a good Swedish bank for European student?

by @raz | 2yr 1 year ago | 1 comment

The ideal bank will have an easy on-boarding as a European student studying and living in Sweden for a year and is merciful when it comes to sending GBP into the account.
Can anybody recommend a good Swedish bank? :raised_hands:

Ho Chi Minh City, Chiang Mai or Bali for Jun-Jul-Aug for work?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @chelocoach | 2yr 2 years ago | 8 comments

Hi experienced nomads!

Iโ€™ve been nomading around SE Asia, HK and China for the last 4 to 5 months. Iโ€™ve been moving a lot and now I need to settle down for 3 months to finish some work. So the idea is to be in a stimulating city where I can find nomads, start-ups, self growth, self improvement, spirituality environments.
I already been for one month in Chiang mai, and liked it a lot in this respect, but wanted to try somewhere new, so was thinking to go to Ho Chi Minh or Bali. As I will be working mainly most of the time, the idea is not to spend much this three months, so my idea is to spend around 1200usd per month.

Would appreciate any opinions on this.

Best place to sit down and work for three months on a 1200usd budget a month?

Thnx

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive | 2yr 2 years ago | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

in Sihanoukville, Cambodia by @keybrownhill | 3yr 2 years ago | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!
