Does anyone have first hand experience with Project Fi in Taipei or Beijing?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @prettypikey | 6yr  | 11 comments

Iโ€™m curious to know if it actually works. The website lists China and Taiwan as countries where it should theoretically work, I was just looking to hear from anyone using it first hand.

I heard something about Google being able to bypass the China firewall native in its software. Ie. built in vpn when using wifi and data? Is this true?

@entrepreneurish, I sent Project Fi a question about how VPN works on Project Fi phones. Right now, the phone will only use Googleโ€™s VPN when connected to an open WiFi network. The phone wonโ€™t use VPN when connecting to a cellular network. You can use a third-party VPN software, though, so you are always connected to a VPN regardless of being connected to WiFi or a cellular network.

I asked specifically about China but they didnโ€™t answer that question.

If Iโ€™m understanding @psedillo correctly, it sounds like he used a third-party VPN. Perhaps he can share a little more detail about his VPN usage. I am definitely interested in knowing because I am considering getting Project Fi.

I can share my experience too now that Iโ€™ve tested it. Project Fi worked great for me in Beijing, no problems with email, social media, maps or the crm my company uses. I also had a 3rd party vpn installed and running (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/).

Thanks for sharing your experience @maggie! I just got my invite, and Iโ€™m still making my decision. Are you using only WiFi or have you connected to a cell network for data?

Any chance you could move this question over to this thread:

Had it going for a couple months now.

FWIW, Fi works pretty well in Central America, so I canโ€™t imagine it wonโ€™t work in China/Taiwan.

@maggie Sorry for the delayed response returned late last week from Beijing and headed out to Portland a few days later.

As for Project Fi in Beijing, it worked flawlessly. I had no problems with cell service while there and used both WeChat (locals) and Messenger (friends & family) for texting.

WiFi is available around the city, so you shouldnโ€™t have a problem connecting wirelessly. You will need a VPN to access any of the social media services. Also, China blocks Google so the VPN will handle this as well.

I hope the service performs well for you while in Beijing.

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor | 2mo 2 months ago | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok, Thailand by @germanrobert | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

How to find accomodation in Las Palmas, Canary Islands

in Las Palmas, Spain by @philippg | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Hi, we are trying to find a house to rent for 2-3 persons near Las Palmas for 4-5 months at the moment and it seems to be almost impossible except through Airbnb which is super expensive. Any advises or local contacts?

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad | 7mo 6 months ago | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 9mo 9 months ago | 39 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

in India by @davda1546 | 9mo 9 months ago | 4 comments

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 10mo 9 months ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard | 1yr 1 year ago | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Looking for a warm place, possibly near the sea with excellent wifi

by @mariaplslourdes | 1yr 1 year ago | 12 comments

hello  Iโ€™m planning my next trip (from January/February), and Iโ€™m looking for a place where itโ€™s hot, with the sea, and good wifi.
At the moment I live in Paris and work with San Francisco times, so preferably I wouldnโ€™t go to Asia.
Iโ€™m thinking, South Africa or South America, what do you recommend?
Thank you

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj | 1yr 1 year ago | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone | 1yr 1 year ago | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack | 1yr 1 year ago | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

What's the first step now that I can work remotely?

by @mariaplslourdes | 2yr 1 year ago | 4 comments

Hi everyone and nice to e-meet you!
finally, after so long I found a job that allows me to work remotely.
But now? Do you have any practical advice that I can use to approach this new world?
In particular, I have to put my tax situation in order, do you know a good tax advisor from whom I can ask for advice? (Iโ€™m Italian but I live in Franceโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how long it will beโ€ฆ) )
Beyond that, any advice is welcome.
Thank you!

Best way to find a basic room/flat in Prague?

in Prague, Czechia by @mappleton | 2yr 1 year ago | 16 comments

Have been stalking craigslist for weeks. Quite a few properties posted. But after sending 20 inquiries have 0 replies. Beginning to wonder if itโ€™s a city that requires on-the-ground apartment hunting. Can anyone whoโ€™s been through Prague before clue me in?

Will be there from April 10th until July. Need a basic, short-term, central room rental. Nothing fancy. Will be working from a co-working space. Under 9000 CZK seems reasonable from what Iโ€™ve seen.

P.S. If anyone else is Prague-bound this summer and room hunting, leave a note! Definitely up for sharing a place with other nomads. Or just hanging out / having co-working sessions.

Are there any digital nomad fitness retreats?

by @ryanjames | 2yr 1 year ago | 1 comment

Hey all:

Does anyone here have any experience attending a full time fitness bootcamp or a fitness resort while working? I know there is one in Cambodia for digital nomads (Fitness Retreat Resort Kep Gym), unfortunately the time difference vs my work schedule would make my life suck if I tried to go there. Iโ€™m looking for a place between US and Europe timezones that lets you live with them, kicks your butt with fitness, but would also have good WiFi/accommodate working eight hours a day. Iโ€™m also open to other tangential ideas for something close-ish to get that same experience.

Thanks for any help!

How do you deal with the fear of leaving for the first time?

by @eddie | 2yr 1 year ago | 32 comments

Hey everyone!

Iโ€™m getting ready for my first trip abroad alone (this Oct). I decided on Chiang Mai because I feel like it might be the best place to get my feet wet. Plus Iโ€™ve been planning on going to Thailand now for about 3 years. Dream started 3 years ago, started my business 2 years ago, finished college/moved out of my parents 1 year ago, left my part-time crutch job a few months ago and now I make enough online to be location independent.

But now that my dream is becoming a reality, Iโ€™m actually kinda scared. Just thinking about boarding a plane with only a backpack in my possession is liberating but also frightening. Probably the craziest thing Iโ€™ve done in my life and Iโ€™ve worked so hard to get to this point.

Iโ€™m sure that most people here had to deal with the fear of leaving for the first time, the uncertainty of what will happen, and maybe even some resistance from your family. Iโ€™m just wondering how you dealt with it? Maybe I just need to re-read some of the books (4 hour workweek, vagabonding, The $100 startup, etcโ€ฆ) that gave me the motivation and courage to start in the first place. What motivates you to keep going?

Thanks!
