How do you avoid settling in one place?

by @sukienniko 5yr  | 10 comments

As a follow up to my previous question (I guess I donโ€™t have the right to post links here?), but on a larger scale: if living as a nomad in a place for, say, more than a month (which will be beneficial for the sake of getting work done), how to you prevent yourself from getting too involved in the local society?

I find that every time I stay somewhere for a significant amount of time, I naturally start to settle into the idea that Iโ€™ll be there permanently, or at least long term. I guess this is human nature: wanting to have a stable lifestyle, with stable friends, relationship, workplace, recreational activities, etc. But, indeed, that is not my goal-- I believe the benefits of the nomadic lifestyle are far greater at this stage in my lifeโ€ฆ

So, for those of you who have successfully avoided settling somewhere time despite staying for months at a time, what strategies do you use to stay afloat, as in, not getting too deeply integrated locally?

For me if I meet a Girl I am staying - and is hard not to and get to know each other. And i do avoid getting involved with Expats too much - had some bad experiences - someone once said is a lot of Alpha Male Expats - could be why. I was 42 when started living like this (11 years later and still do) and most of them were in 70โ€™s so ya - wasnโ€™t popular due to they had their โ€œgfโ€™sโ€ with them. Anyways - after 11 years I cannot go back to where I grew up etc - when i do go to visit I think am going In Country - as in - get in and back out of there as fast as I can. My family not like what I do but ya - is my life - I do what I want. Living with nothing for 11 years and canโ€™t change. I can get up and move with 2 bags and my laptop - have good passport - can go anywhere and will =)

Lots of interesting responses here. The social aspect is perhaps the common theme, so let me summarize them from that perspective.

It seems there are two general approaches:

  1. Deliberately avoid making deep connections with the knowledge that you are only in a place temporarily. This approach assumes a spontaneous lifestyle which does not entail going to the same places repeatedly. That way, you are not tiring yourself out by starting and ending friendships in a short period of time.

  2. Donโ€™t hesitate to get involved socially, and invest yourself in a few places. Make friends in those places so that you have a community to go back to, and plan your lifestyle around staying in those select places in a cyclical fashion.

They key point, at least that @levelsio made is that one should not mix the two and develop deep relationships in a place and then leave, never to come back. Thatโ€™s neither good for you nor those people with whom youโ€™ve connected.

The points to consider in deciding route #1 or #2, in my opinion, are: how to decide on the specific places to go repeatedly, and how much incentive you have to develop a strong social community given oneโ€™s life situation. (Iโ€™ve alluded in my original question that this latter reason has led me to choosing the first approach, which will inevitably change at some point, along with my priorities, as a result of career/financial situation). I donโ€™t think either one is necessarily wrong or right; it depends on the individual. We all have different circumstances in life which bring us to different lifestyle choices which are best for us, but may not be best for others.

Appreciate your responses and happy to continue the discussion further if anyone has anything to add! =)

I find the perspective that โ€œa place will always be thereโ€ to be helpful too. If I want to go back later, I can. This opens up the prospect of traveling more, yet not saying goodbye to any one place, rather an โ€œIโ€™ll be back if I wantโ€. I also would want to stay somewhere long term if thatโ€™s what feels right (minus any visa restrictions), so I would be open to what you are yearning to do; go or stay.
That perspective got me through my sadness of leaving Italy, yet also wanting to travel more! :stuck_out_tongue:

Why not settle in a few places? Moving around from place to place got tiring and psychologically straining for me pretty quickly (within a year) and I had to slow down. Now I go to maybe 4 places regularly. That means I have friends in all those 4 places, or me and my friends decide to meet in one of those places.

Iโ€™d say figure out why you are:

  • prioritizing work
  • running away from friendships and relationships

It also seems like a pretty egocentric mindset. People invest in relationships with you but then you run away to never come back. Thatโ€™s beneficial to you (short term), not to them. Short-term that might work, but long-term thatโ€™s probably going to leave you without anyone.

Everyone is different of course, but friendships and relationships are possibly the most important thing in life. Theyโ€™re the biggest influencer of happiness in humans. Not money. Not success. Not how many places youโ€™ve traveled. Not even total freedom to go anywhere without any bounds. But relationships. Not for all humans of course, thereโ€™s exceptions and maybe youโ€™re one of them of course.

Interesting approach (the levelsioโ€™s one). For instance by now I would do what you suggest in Sicilia and Scotland (and my village in Italia of course), but I had to roam a bit to understand it.

I own a small island in Canada and live there when itโ€™s ice free. That way I have a stable home, a place to keep my stuff and knowledge of where I will be May to October. This gives me time and a place to consolidate, reflect and decompress. I have consistent friends their and I can truly get work done. Fortunately I have never married and have no-one in my life that I have to make decisions with.
However, over my travels, Iโ€™ve been to incredible towns/village and cities where I regularly return to and would love to have a small flat in as a base. My plan is to buy and share it (when Iโ€™m not their) with other travels of similar mind.
It is really nice to know that you have a place to go thatโ€™s yours.

It come down to practice. First โ€˜break-upโ€™ with a 2mo location wonโ€™t be pretty. The second one will be somewhat better. By the third one, you know to appreciate the change of scenery more than the connection you develop with the place (knowing you can develop a similar connection with your next place).

In the end, I think the secret is knowing that you can always come back! But maybe, just maybe, that next location will be better still.

The โ€œanthropologist way of lifeโ€ for one month or two maximum is a solution: observe people, have some chat, attend meeting, experience life, but avoid making friends (just some contacts) and over allโ€ฆ lovers
If you have a huge self-control and you donโ€™t mind braking hearts potentially you could stay longer and go deeper, but after there is the risk that you could loose your status of nomad

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How to avoid getting your stuff stolen?

by @matthieudrula 6yr 6 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,
My question might be blunt ahah but โ€ฆ how do you get your stuff stolen?
Do you stay in hostels, or shady hotels? Or do you get robbed?
I stopped using hostel with outsiders and I pretty much only use budget hotel now.
I have heard about an app that take screenshots of your room and send it to you if it detects movement too so you can alert the hotel staff.
I donโ€™t want to make everybody paranoiac too ;).

Kindergarten experience for DN families. Know a worth-considering place?

by @alexku 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hey guys. At the moment I and my wife have two sons - 4 and 1.5 yo. We spent 5 months in 7 Asian countries last winter. Lack of kindergarten was the number one problem. Thatโ€™s the only one reason that stops nomading all the time.
This time weโ€™d like to do the same on another continent. Weโ€™re thinking about Latin America or Africa. We need a good kindergarten and beautiful safe place with good warm weather.
Ideal scenario - Montessori preschool in not too dry but green place with the temperature about 23-30ยฐC/70-90ยฐF.
Could you please share your experience or the useful information from the friends or relatives?

Bring external monitor to SE asia and avoid coworking cost?

by @anderkd 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Would it be advisable or wacky to lug an external monitor from the US in hopes of avoiding coworking costs by working from Airbnb with decent wifi? Iโ€™m not sold on coworking spaces, and like the solitude of coding away in my own little airbnb space. One screen is limiting to productivity, hence the love of an external monitor. Thoughts?

How do you avoid getting charged large fees by your bank when withdrawing overseas?

by @creative_nomad_ 7yr 7 years ago  | 14 comments

Hi All,

My question is about banking when it comes to being overseas/working etc. How do you avoid getting charged large fees by your bank when withdrawing overseas?

Iโ€™m originally from Australia and do my banking still in Australia. I live in the UK and most recently was living in Vietnam where I found I had to withdrawl money just to get charged very large amounts from my Aussie bank.

How do you get around this? What can you recommend.

Thanks

What do you do to avoid plastic bottled water in Asia?

by @nomadaccountant 8yr 8 years ago  | 18 comments

If I stay somewhere for a while I usually get hard bottled bulk water containers, but often I have to rely on cheap plastic water bottles, which isnโ€™t good from both a health and environmental perspective. Have used a drink bottle with a filter but canโ€™t say I trusted it, and it was a little annoying. Any better options in use?

How to avoid Tax Residency/Wealth Tax in Spain?

in Spain by @palimpalim 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m planning to move to Spain this year, but Spain has a wealth tax for worldwide assets over 700.000โ‚ฌ if you are classified as a resident which I want to avoid.

Iโ€™ll try to be a short as possible:

  • I am a german citizen and Iโ€™m renting a flat in London, UK but havenโ€™t stayed there a single day in 2016. (110 days in different countries in Asia, 10 days in Spain, 30 days in germany)
  • I own a flat in germany that I rent out to tenants (limited tax liability for the rental income in germany), but besides that I donโ€™t have any income except for a few dividends from my stocks
  • I am planning to fly to Thailand for 2 months beginning of December 2016

Although I am renting the UK flat until December 2016 I prefer not to be in UK, which would mean that I would not be classified as a UK-resident because I would not meet any of the automatic UK or sufficient tie tests.

Iโ€™d like to move to Spain as soon as possible but would be willing to stay out of it for x weeks to avoid being classified as a resident and save wealth tax.

Can anyone help me in this matter? whats my best line?

How can you avoid foreign banking, ATM, and transaction fees?

by @danielgenser 8yr 8 years ago  | 52 comments

Whatโ€™s the latest on how to avoid ATM/bank/foreign transaction fees? How do you keep track of money spent when youโ€™re never quite sure of the exact exchange rate? I normally use YNAB to keep on top of my budget here at home, but Iโ€™m dreading keeping tabs on all the minute foreign transaction adjustments abroadโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m looking at this to check out some of the banking options: http://thepointsguy.com/2014/02/the-top-11-checking-accounts-for-avoiding-foreign-atm-fees/

Itโ€™s been a while that I work long hours in front of my computer, and even though I have a pretty descent chair at home, when Iโ€™m on the road, it is quite a worry to figure out how to handle my chair situation. Especially the last 2 years, it got worse and Iโ€™m almost scared to not be able to work enough because of my back problems. I just wanted to know if anybody has the same problem, if anybody has some magic tricks, tips or equipment.
