What do you get out of the #nomads chat?

by @travis | 5yr  | 8 comments

Iโ€™m assuming a lot of people on here are also members of #nomads. Iโ€™ve considered joining, but Iโ€™m curious about what value you get out of it, how itโ€™s been useful, etc.

Note: Iโ€™m certainly not trying to ask โ€œis it worth itโ€ or undercut itsโ€™ value in any way โ€“ Iโ€™m mostly curious about how itโ€™s useful and trying to figure out if it would be a good fit for me, and figure other people might benefit from that discussion as well

Great question, I was wondering this too.

I donโ€™t start traveling until next month, so I was thinking of joining the chat once I get more on the road. Just another way to stay connected and have more real-time communication with people in the same location.

Iโ€™d say the amount of knowledge to help you plan your trip makes it worth joining before you leave vs once youโ€™re on the road.

Yep!

Without it, you still have access to loads of free data on https://nomadlist.com itself, this forum, http://reddit.com/r/digitalnomads, http://wikitravel.org and the thousands of blogs by digital nomads.

I donโ€™t think you need it necessarily, itโ€™s just another little help to get to know more people. Especially if youโ€™re in one of the more popular destinations. You can do that on this forum too though.

Itโ€™s also the only way I monetize Nomad List, this forum, etc. so itโ€™s a way to contribute to the development and upkeep.

Iโ€™ll convert everything slowly into a Nomad List membership where all #nomads users will be grandfathered in (so if youโ€™re already a user there, itโ€™ll be okay). And thatโ€™ll give you full access to the forum, chat, and more site features. Forum posting might be limited to only members then. That helps with monetization and also keeps spam down.

With any community I think you get out what you put in.
In my โ€œnomadicโ€ travels over the last year, maybe only 5% of the people Iโ€™ve met have been because of the Slack chat. Its been more likely that Iโ€™ve randomly met people who happen to be on there, or at least know about it. If you have a lot of questions about nomad-related things (BACKPACKS!!! TAXES!!) then I could see the value of getting group opinions, but as its a chat, questions get lost fast, which is why this forum is a better place to ask them.

Iโ€™m might be slightly opinionated, because iโ€™m one of admins. But here goes nothing:

  • Big community of like-minded people, who have different expertise, who share their experience. (i got so much feedback for my projects)
  • I hear opinions from other likeminded people where to go
  • Without wasting my time online researching place, i just buy tickets and meet local people. Who donโ€™t mind sharing their experience in this place (best way to learn about a place).
  • I can find clients, find other freelancers to cooperate on projects

Not mentioning, that now i have a lot of friends from different countries and we occasionally bump in into each other in different places.

Post Covid Tour Trip: Any Ideas ? Who Joins?

by @boccaccio | 18h 17 hours ago | 0 comments

I can't help thinking of making a trip after this annoying virus. A road trip, boat trip, bike, foot, anything..

Any ideas? Any tips? and Anyone who would like to join or co-organize?

It could be for example, to travel in several Countries and being hosted (when possible) by some other members.

Or renting a van and making a long road trip

Or even by bike, an entire Country

Where should I set up my company as a remote worker?

by @beloruchka | 4d 3 days ago | 7 comments

Iโ€™m looking for any recommendations for services or people others have used to get answers on the best place to set up their businesses based on their personal circumstances.

Leaning towards Singapore after a ton of research, but would really like some concrete advice before jumping in.

Appreciate it!

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 | 13d 13 days ago | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.
