Can you name some destinations where hardly anyone smokes?

by @ani_goes_tweet 7yr  | 24 comments

Iโ€™m dying to spend some time in a beautiful place (especially a place with mountains and a good climate) where itโ€™s possible to enjoy the outdoor cafe culture without breathing in lots of secondhand smoke! There must be some places that are kinder to non-smokers than others.

Any suggestions?

(Bhutan is no goodโ€ฆ its daily tourist visa is way out of my reach!)

Hereโ€™s cities with clean air ranked by how much people smoke per year: https://nomadlist.com/safe-cities-with-clean-air#sort=smoking_packs_per_year&order=asc

In reference to an earlier post, about two months ago I left Medellin after having been there for about 6 months, and it was not a smoke free place in my experience. This could have just been the particular cafe that I frequented, but there was a group of older expat gentlemen who were frequently putting down cigarettes with reckless abandon.

We just visited Ljubljana, Slovenia and the first thing we thought was - no one is smoking! Of course people smoked there but it was far far less than what we dealt with in Italy and Croatia. It seems to have a health conscious scene too - good organic and vegan food places, which Iโ€™ve found pairs socially with less smoking.

Iโ€™m in Rome at the moment and this is the ONE thing killing our enjoyment. Smokingโ€ฆeverywhereโ€ฆALLL the time. (then thereโ€™s the car exhaust). I too value this, so thanks for posting.

Iโ€™m from California, and smoking is heavily frowned upon there, or in the least telling someone to stop smoking near you is expected. Itโ€™s a health conscious, progressive state. You canโ€™t smoke near doors, or outdoor cafes. And plenty of natural beauty and perfect climate. But if you are from the U.S, youโ€™re probably not looking to go back atm :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Ani,

Singapore is the place for you.

It has the strictest laws against smoking and highest tax on cigarettes, resulting a lowest adult smoking rate. I suffer from asthma since young so I researched into these stats and settled for Singapore.

Weather here is beautiful, too.

Thailand made smoking an offense in indoor public spaces including restaurants and bars, public transport, work places and many outdoor public spaces like parks or markets.

Few locals smoke in the cities but of course itโ€™s always different in the countryside.

Costa Rica / Nicaragua in the more developed regions seemed almost hostile to public cigarette smoking. Still some going on in outdoor cafes, but the culture did seem against it.

It really is a shame they still allow smoking in outdoor cafes in Europe. That really is my pet peeveโ€ฆ Everywhere in France and Italy, nobody ever seemed to give a thought or care to the people sitting one foot from them at a table trying to enjoy the meal, lighting up one cigarette after another after anotherโ€ฆ I know they grew up with a cigarette culture, but itโ€™s like humidityโ€ฆ If you didnโ€™t grow up around itโ€ฆ it really is miserable to be around.

Well, still plenty of people smokes here, but in the last couple of years the law banning smoking in public places is enforced, so every public place (cafes and the likes) are smoke-free in Medellรญn, Colombia.

It also complies with all your other requirements: beautiful, mountains, coffee culture and spring weather year round -plus: good equipment/infrastructure/services, favorable exchange rate from USD, etc.

Thanks, thatโ€™s interesting - Colombia isnโ€™t a place that would have come to mind - not in terms of a smoke-free outdoors, anyway! Is it only Medellin thatโ€™s benefiting from enforcement of the public-smoking ban, or is this also true of other cities in Colombia?

Almost everywhere in Colombiaโ€™s biggest cities I would say. I just point out to Medellรญn because I am from there and It is very popular right now with foreigners -for good reasons, without saying itโ€™s perfect.

But the small towns in the coffee region (Manizales, Salento, for example) are pretty similar, if only not as cosmopolite, same with the north coast cities (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Barranquilla, with beaches and warm weather); but for coffee culture, mountains, and spring-like weather, Medellรญn itโ€™s high on the list.

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack 4yr 4 years ago  | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

What's the best warm destinations in Europe in the winter?

by @jammingsloth 5yr 5 years ago  | 33 comments

Planning ahead for the winter. Iโ€™ll be in Spain in the Fall and want to go someplace warm for the winter in or near Europe, but not Schengen. Was first thinking Cape Town, but the internet is slow and it is very far. Was also thinking:
Israel - but airbnb listings are very pricey.
Morocco?
Turkey - maybe a little chilly.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Anyone here resident in Portugal with incorporation elsewhere in the EU? Need some advice

in Portugal by @solardive 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everyone!

Currently looking at ridding myself of the 9-5 and becoming a freelance consultant. Iโ€™m not planning to go full erm, โ€œtax optimisationโ€, as I believe in taxes as a concept, but I would like to pay less of them so I can get my business off the ground with more peace of mind.

Iโ€™ve decided I want to apply for the Portugal NHR (Iโ€™m a EU citizen), but I donโ€™t want to incorporate there. Anyone here has experience with being a Portugal tax resident and running a company elsewhere? If yes, where and why did you choose that country/place? Is it a a lot of hassle?

Thanks!

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

in Sihanoukville , Cambodia by @keybrownhill 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!

Anyone (almost) exclusively traveling in Latin America?

Is there anyone around who spends most of their time in Latin America? After short trips to Peru earlier this year, Iโ€™ve now come back to Lima to stay for another three months and will then head to Buenos Aires. Lima will be kind of my home base but I aim to explore as much as possible of Latin America in the next couple of years. Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? Iโ€™m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: Iโ€™ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since itโ€™s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

Iโ€™m thinking if itโ€™s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).
