Does anyone have practical experience of coworking in Kyoto, Japan?

in Kyoto, Japan by @jonlay | 5yr  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m looking to take a trip to Japan and am considering a month in Osaka.

There are a few co-working spaces appearing online:

There are also some very old articles out there from 2012.

But most of the information online seems very dated and as a non-Japanese speaker, itโ€™s tricky to figure out whatโ€™s current, without emailing each of them via Facebook and trying to narrow down the list.

Anyone have any recent experiences or recommendations?

Thanks guys! Iโ€™d been researching a bunch of stuff over the last few weeks and ended up opting for Osaka in the end for a longer stay, with 2 weeks in Tokyo.

As you say, itโ€™s tricky and expensive to find co-working spaces, but I was a little bit worried about the ergonomics of cafe spaces and since I end up needing to make quite a lot of Skype calls, wasnโ€™t so sure about how well that would work.

Anyway, a little bit of home-working from an AirBnb in Tokyo (avoiding co-working costs) and then grabbing a co-working spot in Osaka looks like it should work out quite nicely. Kyoto would have been lovely but I canโ€™t quite justify the high prices. Looks like Osaka might be a nice compromise.

Thanks again for the tips! It was definitely useful

I know youโ€™re looking for coworking places, but Iโ€™d like to add to kathrynohโ€™s cafe suggestion. But for Internet access, I almost always had to use a pocket wifi device or have one as back up. Some cafeโ€™s had slow wifi, or required a Japanese phone number to register, or didnโ€™t have wifi at all.

Like kaythrynoh mentioned, in Kyoto, I checked out a internet/manga cafe once with private booths but they allowed smoking, so I couldnโ€™t stay to work. But, if there are non-smoking ones they do seem like good places to really focus.

I donโ€™t have any Osaka recommendations because I only stayed there for two days and didnโ€™t work. But, in Kyoto I went to Mos Cafe (the link goes to Google Maps) multiple times and found that the 2nd floor is a good place to work. However, I did have to used my AirBnBโ€™s pocket wifi for Internet access.

(Unlike kathrynoh, I would choose Kyoto over Osaka but thatโ€™s not too relevant here haha  )

I used a coworking space in Osaka last year but I forget the name of it, sorry. I didnโ€™t find it that great anyway. It has the feeling of working in a public library which made me think why didnโ€™t I just go to to a library and use the space for free! It seemed more of a space for students to use for study.

If spaces only have information in Japanese, Iโ€™d think they are unlikely to have English speaking staff available which could be an issue. When if you figure out the info on the site using a translator, what are you doing to do when you get there and have to speak to people in person.

Btw are you looking in Osaka or Kyoto? Most of your links seem to be for Kyoto.

Oh, rubbish. Thatโ€™s what happen when you try to plan and research around about 3 different cities at once. Iโ€™d actually found some workable options in Osaka but Kyoto was the one I was struggling with!

The Terminalโ€™ just confirmed to say that they are still operating, so thatโ€™s one option in Kyoto now. Although Iโ€™m struggling to find decent Kyoto accommodation options via AirBnb that fit my budget and arenโ€™t miles away from co-working, so I might yet end up switching back to looking around Osaka.

Iโ€™m more concerned about good wifi and a proper desk than I am about super energetic networking and community, since I wonโ€™t be travelling alone. iโ€™d heard the same elsewhere about the language barrier but I was hoping that with pocket wifi in tow for Google Translate, thereโ€™ll be a way to hack through it.

If you donโ€™t need all the functionality of a coworking space, you might get by with using cafes. Japan has a very strong working in cafes culture. Itโ€™s common for people to sit at a table for hours working, studying, sleeping. A lot of the cafes are very quiet and secure. Seriously, people will walk in, put their wallet or phone on a table to secure it then go order! Iโ€™d never do that myself, only takes one bad one for it to become and issue.

The only issues I had with cafes were finding somewhere with good ergonomics for working long periods and ones with power outlets. If youโ€™re a non-smoker and smoking bothers you, might be worth doing a check for that. A lot of places donโ€™t have any barrier between smoking and non-smoking sections although most upmarket cafes now are non-smoking or just have a smoking booth.

You might get by with google translate although if you arenโ€™t actually coworking, all you are really getting for your dayโ€™s fees is a work space and bad coffee

Another option in Japan is using internet/manga cafes. You get your own private booth with a desk and computer chair usually. Some of them have convoluted sign in processes but you can usually by-pass that if you let them know you are using your own laptop. The places are usually dark and cave-like though, lighting in your booth but dark everywhere else. You do usually get unlimited soft drinks, bad machine coffee and sometimes even snacks for the price.

Iโ€™d go Osaka over Kyoto, but thatโ€™s my personal preference. Most tourists overlook Osaka, except for the big ticket attractions (eg. Universal Studios) in favour of the traditional style of Kyoto but I find Kyoto a bit boring. How many temples do you want to look at? Osaka has a much better energy, I find. Also, awesome food. Itโ€™s also cheaper because it doesnโ€™t have the tourist appeal.

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint | 3mo 3 months ago | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad | 4mo 3 months ago | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 7mo 6 months ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard | 11mo 11 months ago | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone | 1yr 1 year ago | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone been terminated by Project Fi?

by @jackgopack | 1yr 1 year ago | 15 comments

Any long terms Project Fi users cancelled?

Planning on being outside of the US for a year or more and disappointed to just discover their โ€œtermination for excessive international roamingโ€ fine print (similar to T-Mobileโ€™s) as follows:

โ€œThe Services must be primarily used in the United States and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Project Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming.โ€

Foreigner owned Coworking business in Malaysia

in Malaysia by @newyam | 2yr 2 years ago | 0 comments

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.

Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.
Cheers
Yamin

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce | 2yr 2 years ago | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

Can anyone recommend a good Swedish bank for European student?

The ideal bank will have an easy on-boarding as a European student studying and living in Sweden for a year and is merciful when it comes to sending GBP into the account.

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @adele | 3yr 2 years ago | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.
