What are some good Spanish language learning resources?

by @anon820208506yr  | 8 comments

Hey all,

I am planning to move over to South America next year, and in preparation I want to start learning Spanish.

I have started working with Duolingo, but would love to hear some advice from others in the community as to resources (apps, podcasts etc) that will help with this? Does anyone else have any suggestion as to what worked for you?

I am under no illusion that an app or podcast will probably not make me speak the language particularly well, but it will at least place me in a better position than if I made no effort to learn the language.

Once I am between native speakers and have more opportunity to practice I am sure I will improve a lot, but for now I am looking into getting a bit of a jumpstart.

Thanks

I can tell you my top 3:

-vocabla -> This app is also for free and I like it to learn lists of vocabulary. It works with visual cards and grammar test. For me, the best in this case is that you can add your own words and addapt the app to your real learning. You know, others online platform only allow you follow its method. But it does not work vey well, it has a lot of technical problems. I am looking for another app similiar to these but I have not found it yet.
->Memrise-> I am currently using it to improve my English and it is very similar to Duolingo.
-> Other online platforms. -> There is a spanish course barcelona that also provides online lessons with your own personal teacher.

I learned Spanish in Guatemala. You can get 4 hours a day of 1 on 1 instruction, plus stay with a family with meals for around $80 a week, though those prices might have changed.

Check out Antigua, Guatemala and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala for places that have a lot of Spanish students and are inexpensive to stay. I went from zero to conversational in a month.

Memrise is the next step after Duolingo has taught you basic grammar and you want to regularly improve your vocab.

XPLingo was just launched the other day as a new way to learn Spanish. Itโ€™s a RPG in which you follow a story around Barcelona. Give it a go. Thereโ€™s a free beta right now.

Italki is great for organising formal/informal lessons or just language exchange. You just need to start speaking. Iโ€™m learning French and took myself to France 3 months ago. The only thing that really works is to start speaking. But I had learned basic grammar before I went. All the online polyglots say just speak, whatever your level.

As a guy from Pennsylvania, USA who didnโ€™t know Spanish prior, I lived as a foreign exchange student in Chile for a year, then in Spain for another half year. I can tell you for sure your Spanish will skyrocket once your forced to converse. In fact, I found the hardest thing was to stop people from wanting to practice their English skills with you!

But my suggestion is to get Spanish kids books. Like ones for 4 and 5 year olds. Ones with big print and illustrations. Then have a Spanish dictionary right next to you. Read everything aloud and look up the words you donโ€™t know. Youโ€™ll be amazed at how well this works.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips on the kids books. Now is difficult to get hold of ones, but I will pick up a few once I get over there.

A few things that I use:

Another thing I have is a Kindle with a Spanish dictionary and Spanish language books, itโ€™s a great way to read since any unknown words can be instantly looked up.

Note: Apart from the Spanish Dict website, none of the above links are Spanish specific.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio7mo 6 months ago | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife8mo 7 months ago | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo8mo 7 months ago | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info1328mo 7 months ago | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara8mo 7 months ago | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor8mo 8 months ago | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

What are some good resources for professional prospective Mexican Nomads to do freelance translations and copyediting in Spanish in the United States and Canada?

in Canada by @nightchimp4yr 4 years ago | 2 comments

I have a friend who is a UNAM graduate in Philology (I know, wow, a Renaissance Woman), who has been creating textual translations between Spanish, English and sometimes Russian for writers, poets and journalists in Mexico City. She is very good at what she does, and has a client base, and just recently gained a client in the US. I want her to be able to take advantage of digital means to reach potential clients in the US and Canada, especially in regions where there are not a lot of Spanish speakers already present and active in this work locally. What are some good resources to find these sorts of opportunities? Yes, weโ€™ve beaten the proverbial bush to find Indeed listings, Craigslist (so sad what has happened to CL lately), and LinkedIn, as well as Upwork.com and Freelancer.com. We found mostly bupkiss. Any tips/hints/admonitions? Thanks in advance!

How do you get a SIM card (and data plan) in Colombia if you don't know Spanish

in Colombia by @balindsieber5yr 4 years ago | 2 comments

I just arrived to Medellin and did not anticipate that no one would speak any english at all. (Iโ€™m used to Asia where everyone knows the basics)

I need a SIM card, I found a place at the mall where they sell them, but itโ€™s not a simple transaction and I donโ€™t speak Spanish.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Where do I pay tax as a U.S. citizen with Spanish residency making money from my book royalties?

by @chrisryanphd6yr 5 years ago | 1 comment

Iโ€™m an author, US passport, Spanish residency. I could live anywhere (or nowhere), but Iโ€™m unsure what the best option would be. Iโ€™ve been told I should pay tax in the country where I wrote the book, where I reside when the money is paid, where I reside when the advance is paid, etc. Nobody really seems to know. Any other writers facing these issues? Thanks.

Open distance learning vs learning at contact institution

by @stevie7yr 6 years ago | 2 comments

Do you think open distance learning is better than learning at contact institution? With all the online learning options available these days I feel much more can be achieved by learning online than than going to class every day. Come to think about it, look at all the time that is being wasted, driving there, sitting in class, pack up, go back home and the next day the same routine again. How do you feel about it?
