Is Bogota safe to travel?

in Bogota , Colombia by @jackgopack  | 6 comments

HI All!

Considering Bogota for a while but recent reporting indicates quite a few robbery related deaths and the fact that US State Dept personnel and their families are not allowed to use inter- or intra-city bus transportation, with flights mandatory between Colombian cities. Anyone have any insight as to the current reality vs such reporting?

I know they often donโ€™t match but since our nomadlist.com rates Bogota safety as โ€œbadโ€, I would greatly appreciate anyone providing a current or recent boots on the ground status report as to this effect.

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @adele  | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.

We purchased an apartment in Medellin and are looking to ship some stuff from our storage unit there. Value of the stuff varies from Vitamix to iMacsโ€ฆ

Wondering if any of you can suggest the best shippers to work with. Weโ€™re not in a hurry to get it but want to make sure it arrives in one piece.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What's the best surf spots in California or South America?

in Cali , Colombia by @rynesweeney  | 8 comments

I am currently living in Medellin until February. I want to find some of people favorite spots for surfing and community. I have heard Nicaragua and Guatemala have many options.

Multiple one month or more stays in countries below the US (CA, SA, Caribbean as all?). Spanish isnโ€™t a problem. Safety, internet, and surf are priorities. Ive heard good things about Panama and CR but they amount of gringos currently in these places is sort of a turn off (Im a gringoโ€ฆbut that is my preference). Budget is sub $1500/month.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Short term (1-3 months) in Medellin?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @jodie_taylor  | 30 comments

Hello all,

Iโ€™m just interested on anyones experience of renting short term (1-3 months) accommodation in Medellin, Colombia.

I had a look on Airbnb of course, lots of places, on the more expensive which isnโ€™t a huge issueโ€ฆ Iโ€™m just wondering if in anyones experience itโ€™s better to take a room for a week and shop around when I get there or whether I should just book a month upfront? I recently had a bad experience with Airbnb so not dying to go down that road again just yet if Iโ€™m honest.

Iโ€™ll be arriving in Medellin from November onwards over the Xmas period and likely through till January, maybe longer. Another friend is coming with me so we could potentially rent a 2 bed apartment, or Iโ€™d also be happy in a studio or a private room in a decent house even. Iโ€™m thinking El Poblano or Laureles, as we are two girls with limited Spanish.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

How do you get a SIM card (and data plan) in Colombia if you don't know Spanish

in Colombia by @balindsieber  | 2 comments

I just arrived to Medellin and did not anticipate that no one would speak any english at all. (Iโ€™m used to Asia where everyone knows the basics)

I need a SIM card, I found a place at the mall where they sell them, but itโ€™s not a simple transaction and I donโ€™t speak Spanish.

Any thoughts appreciated.

How to find a 1-month apartment for rent in Medellin, Colombia?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @levelsio  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m visiting Medellin this October for a month and was wondering whatโ€™s the best way to find a place there.

Iโ€™m looking at El Pabelado, but on Airbnb itโ€™s all like $1500, when I know the real rent price there for a 1br should be $600.

Anyone can recommend some locals so I wonโ€™t get scammed/overpay?

Where should we live in Colombia for six months?

in Colombia by @supernoveau  | 2 comments

Hola!

My girlfriend and I are working and slow travelling through Central and South America. We usually live in each location for around three to six months. For instance, weโ€™ve been living on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala for nearly six months now.

Weโ€™re planning our next location in Central and South America to rent for six months and weโ€™re hearing great things about Colombia.

Weโ€™d like to live in a safe and quiet natural location with friendly locals, a comfortable climate and have access to quality produce (food).

Can anyone recommend where we can live? Any tips on rentals would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Iโ€™ll be in Medellin next week and would like to get a dental check up and maybe some work done before cycling into the mountains to the south. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent and cheap dentist? English or Spanish speaking is fine.

Thanks!

How do I get an Independent Work Visa (TP7) for Colombia

in Colombia by @matthieudrula  | 0 comments

I work as remote freelance developer (might become permanent) for US companies and I want to go back to Colombia. I already used my tourist visa. I have seen that itโ€™s possible to get a TP7 for independent work but I donโ€™t understand two points :

  1. Authorization or registration of the foreignerโ€™s activity, issued by the respective regulatory entity when appropriate. (What is the regulatory entity here?)
  2. Document certifying the address of the place where the activity or work is to be carried out, such as an authentic copy of the RUT or certification of existence and legal representation, issued by the respective Chamber of Commerce.
At the moment Iโ€™m in Arequipa, Peru. Do I have to remotely create a company in Colombia? Do I need a contract as Independent with a Colombian company?
I got a UK LTD too if that can help.
PS: If you know some great intermediary companies that can handle all this against fees.

What is the cheapest option to get out of Colombia for 1-2 weeks and come back

in Colombia by @matthieudrula  | 6 comments

Hi,
This is quite a specific question but can be generic in term of method.
I need to get some time out of Bogota so I can come on the remaining days of my touristic visa in order to enrol in a cheapest university to study Spanish.
So basically going out for 2 weeks, come back, do the papers during the 3 remaining weeks.
Iโ€™m trying to find the cheapest flight + hotel combination for this period of time using Nomadlist.
Anybody has a better method/experience?

Is getting a work visa then quitting a possibility to stay long-term? (For Colombia)

in Colombia by @matthieudrula  | 0 comments

In Colombia, I have heard people telling me that once you have a work visa you can enter and not care about what happen if you get fired.
Unlike the USA where if you lose your job, you are *****ed.
Is it a possibility to get a job, get in, open a bank account(not sure if thatโ€™s a good idea since itโ€™s not going to receive a consistent flow of cash from a Colombian company), then quit and work as a freelance remote.

Are there Nomad List meetups in Bogota or Medellin?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @dcodyschm  | 10 comments

Iโ€™m currently looking to go to one of the two cities in the upcoming months (or both!) to do research for a documentary. Are there any shared workspaces or meet-ups for nomad anyone recommends? Iโ€™d love to interview people who have been living there for a while and do a bit of networking. For you veterans, whatโ€™s the best way to go about this?

Which bank can I use for my UK LLC in Colombia?

in Colombia by @matthieudrula  | 6 comments

Just phoned my current business bank in the UK(cashplus), they told me that I need to be in the UK to keep using their account.
Can I open a new bank account in Colombia and use it to trade for my UK LLC?
I have seen this : Non UK resident banks
But many requirements to open those bank accounts (having a UK resident shareholder, coming back to the UK, making a deposit of 20K).

How can I keep a business license in California, while I work remotely?

in Cali , Colombia by @fuzzybabybunny  | 2 comments

I used to live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I registered an LLC and the business address was the actual location of my office. I hung my business license in the location as well, as required.

The business does 100% of its business in the San Francisco Bay Area. Customers are there. My contractors are there. My business is focused there.

Well, the business hasnโ€™t changed but Iโ€™m able to work remotely from anywhere in the world.

  • I no longer have an office in the Bay Area, so no where to hang my business license. In the past inspectors have come into my office to check that my business license was there.
  • I donโ€™t have any physical location that I go back to in the US.
  • The only address I use is a mailing address for a mail-forwarding company that I use. I rent a locker from them and they consolidate all my mail and forward it to me where ever I may be in the world at that time. They have warehouse locations in Los Angeles, Reno, and Portland.

Considering my situation, how should I go about getting a business license in California?

  • LegalZoom says: โ€œCalifornia state law requires businesses to use a street address in California. PO Boxes are not allowed. If your business is run out of your home, you can use that address.โ€
  • I donโ€™t have a physical location, so thereโ€™s no where to hang my license when I apply for one from the city.
  • What would my business address be?
  • Should I apply for a business license in the city where the mail-forwarding company has the warehouse?
  • I also donโ€™t have a location/person to act as my process agent in case someone needs to serve me court papers.
  • Ideally, I want to do EVERYTHING out of my mailing address, but all it is is a locker in a massive warehouse managed by the mail-forwarding company.

Where to stay in the USA for 6 months? Vegas, California? Something else?

in Cali , Colombia by @yesmad  | 21 comments

My girlfriend and I are Canadian nomads looking to spend 6 months (ideally) in the US this winter. Weโ€™re trying to figure out the best place to do so! The goal is to live somewhere nice and build up more savings and income.

Since weโ€™re in Montreal and sick of the brutal winters, we want somewhere warm. And since weโ€™re nomading, weโ€™re looking to stay as cheap as possible, but also comfortable. Weโ€™d like to do a short-term (furnished) rental as opposed to a hotel or room rental since weโ€™re a couple.

We also want to live somewhere nice enough, not in a dangerous area or anything like that. We like parks, shopping, farmerโ€™s markets, etc. Not too big on night life.

Ideally, weโ€™d like somewhere in California, but Iโ€™m not sure how realistic that is for our budget ($1500/month rent at the max).

As of now weโ€™ve also looked at Las Vegas, which seems on the more affordable end of the spectrum. Austin was also on our radar, but again, not sure how realistic that is for our budget.

The biggest problem we have is actually finding available rentals online! We need something furnished! Doing anything through Craigslist online is out, and I know most people will suggest AirBNB, but it seems rather inflated in price. Other than that, there seems to be only private websites that are just as difficult (or untrustworthy looking) as Craigslist.

Can anyone point us in the right direction? Where would you guys suggest in our situation? Anyone from Vegas/California/Austin that could point us in the right direction for furnished short-term housing?

This seems like a really great community! I hope someone out there can help us out!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.
