Do you always have an onward air ticket when entering a new country?

by @danielgenser |  | 54 comments

Iโ€™m looking into visa requirements for Indonesia and Thailand (our first two stops) and itโ€™s looking like Iโ€™ll need to show proof of onward air tickets out of both countries to be allowed in. Is that true in practice?

If so, Iโ€™m curious how other nomads manage it โ€“ do you just buy cheap tickets out that youโ€™re OK with not using to satisfy the requirement? Or do you chance it?

Which Pocket Wi-Fi should I choose in Japan?

in Japan by @chrispking |  | 9 comments

Hi

Does anyone have any recommendations for the โ€˜Pocket Wi-Fiโ€™ network in Japan? Thereโ€™s a few options Iโ€™m considering including UQ Wimax, au, NTT Docomo and Y Mobile. UQ Wimax and au look like better products for the money so likely Iโ€™ll go with one of them (saying that all of the products/hardware in Japan is exceptional)โ€ฆ

Specifically interested in experiences and recommendations of the wireless network coverage, reliability etc.

Iโ€™ll be predominantly based in Osaka for the next six months, however, I will be travelling for one or two months. Certainly, Iโ€™ve got a short trip to Kyushu planned and will be doing a nationwide JR Pass train tripโ€ฆso will need access whilst travelling on the shinkansen (bullet train).

Anyone had any experience of UQ Wimax or au wireless networks?

Thanks

Best tool to check different timezones?

by @marcusmeurer |  | 25 comments

Have to set up a skype call and always wonder which is the best tool to check the time difference?
I have been on a site where the interface was nicely designed on a world map. Anyone know which one that is?

How feasible is it to be a digital nomad with a treadmill desk setup?

by @nihilista |  | 8 comments

Hi everyone,

Iโ€™m very interested in becoming a digital nomad though due to sports injuries, chronic back pain, and a general avid interest in health I need to work on a treadmill desk which is my set up at home. I absolutely could not work long term out of coffee shops or even hotel rooms geared towards businesspeople.

After careful consideration, my plan as a solution for this would be to carefully research and choose a first location at which I could set up a long term situation (at least 5-6 months), long enough such that the expense of setting up a proper โ€œhome officeโ€ would work. Iโ€™m thinking that renting an apartment or ideally a house (I hate noise and prefer rustic, natural environments) would be ideal.

Is this feasible? I currently have about 5k in passive monthly income and 1k in online income but would prefer to spend only 3-4k total so as to save money. Other considerations are that Iโ€™m a single woman in her twenties so the area would need to be relatively safe or the ability to hire a guard for the house would have to also be affordable (I have extensive experience living in developing Asia with household help and guards and greatly enjoyed the lifestyle). My main interest in becoming a digital nomad is to experience different cultures though I am not much of an active sightseer; I prefer to absorb a culture deeply rather than simply seeing things or checking them off my list. I also would like to live somewhere that I could hire regular maid service and possibly even a cook. Iโ€™m extremely self-sufficient, can spend days and even weeks working alone, prefer home cooked healthy meals (never eat out) and do not enjoy nightlife. For recreation I prefer outdoors activities such as hiking and running, as well as reading and meditating. Access to a gym or space to set up a simple home gym (i.e. a set of free weights) would also be ideal.

In other words, my ideal situation would be to set up something resembling a home in each place (or even just one place - Iโ€™m fine living somewhere I love for years or forever; Iโ€™m not looking to check off a list of places) , while still saving some money (compared to living in the US).

Aside from the logistics of the above setup Iโ€™m confident given awareness of my personality and previous travel experience, that I would greatly enjoy this lifestyle. I just canโ€™t stomach the thought of not having a proper ergonomic setup! :stuck_out_tongue:

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Is the strong US$ affecting you?

by @freedomsurfer |  | 9 comments

Today the EURUSD rate is around 1.05, a multi-year high. While it was predictable that the Euro would collapse (it was always way overpriced), the speed of itโ€™s collapse is surprising. Itโ€™s the same thing with the Australian $, the Canadian $, the British pound, the Yen and many other currencies.

Are you affected by those forex moves? Will they influence your future plans? Maybe a change in destination?

What's the fastest way to become a digital nomad?

by @mirona |  | 18 comments

I just got laid off of my job as a software developer. I have 60 days to figure something out. Iโ€™m not very confident in my skills, though I have a bit of entrepreneurial experience. Itโ€™s just very hard for me to imagine making the leap. Where should I start ? Elance, Odesk, Freelancer.com, I also have a couple of websites I can try to monetize, though Iโ€™m not very confident in my ability to do this. What are the other options!? All I know is I must be free!! Please add me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/mirona.constantinescu or here: http://linkedin.com/in/mironaconstantinescu

Whatโ€™s the best mobile-data option in Australia (Melbourne) for nomads?

in Melbourne, Australia by @iamfledge |  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m due to spend a couple of weeks in Melbourne in April and looking to see if thereโ€™s a good non-contract mobile data option for my time there.

Ideally Iโ€™d like to be able to tether to my laptop. Any Aus based nomads able to make some recommendations?
