Any Nomad Families have experience with bringing a nanny along?

by @mallorymcgowan |  | 1 comment

Hello! Do any nomad families here have experience bringing a nanny abroad and would be willing to chat? We have a wonderful nanny in the US whom we trust and our daughter loves and had been planning to bring her to thailand with us in the new year - but now after a string of bad luck finding suitable nannies/sitters for our daughter weโ€™re thinking of flying her out to Europe to join us ASAP. Sheโ€™s hinted heavily at being ready to travel with us but we want to get the details clear on our end before sending her an offer. Obviously weโ€™d be covering room/board and some sort of monthly salary, but we have lots of questions about the smaller details of how this should work/what to expect.

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

What nomads are out there traveling married and/or with a family?

by @danielgenser |  | 37 comments

Iโ€™m curious to hear from the nomads out there who are traveling as a married couple (or long term committed couple, no matter). Many of the articles, guides, and tips one reads are understandably written from the single travelerโ€™s perspective (even if they are traveling in a group).

What nomads are out there traveling with a marriage mate and/or family?

I guess if you're a nomad this doesn't matter much, but the long-term job pickings here are slim and among the most underpaid for a US city. There seems to be a tacit rent floor that means you won't find a good deal on housing. A lot of people don't seem very invested in their interpersonal relationships here since their ties to the area are often transient.

Orlando has lots to do, but it is very spaced out and requires a car to get around. This fact is obvious by the constant traffic. The airport has great access, but is always extremely busy. Visit a few times to see Disney and Universal, but there are many other cities I'd prefer to live and spend more time in.

  • New York City

I've lived in New York City - Brooklyn - for over 20 years. For visiting tourists, the best neighborhood to stay in is NOT Bushwick. Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Ft. Green or Brooklyn Heights is preferable. Plenty of good transportation in those areas - subway, buses or Uber. Easy access to beaches in Long Island and New Jersey. There's plenty to do in NYC. Great restaurants, Broadway plays (!), and in the summer you frequently can catch a free concert.

During my brief trip to Paris, I was surprised to find few people spoke English. I speak French moderately well and always began speaking with people in French. At the hotel, I had some questions I couldn't ask in French and was surprised that the front-desk staff seemingly only spoke a few words of English. Aside from that, I did not find people rude, just businesslike. My favorite neighborhood was the Quartier Latin - I would live there if I could! I didn't see any tourists in that arrond

Very luxurious yet has some parts of the city that are charming and have gothic architecture. A lot of tourists and people from Balkans who work in region. Pretty expensive. If you are not very rich just visit it and choose to stay in some other, more modest german city. In my opinion Frankfurt is city nr 3 in Germany after Berlin and Munich and I have travelled through much of Germany. Hamburg and Cologne are somewhere with the Frankfurt, but Frankfurt is more luxurious.
