Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

After a month in Paris I can honestly say I have never enjoyed myself more from a culture perspective. The eating, drinking, and nightlife is excellent. People often complain that French people are rude but they have it all wrong. They are very formal. Dining is quite different as it doesn't align with the experience in America. In France restaurants are a space you are invited into and the waiters and chefs are professionals who know how best to treat you during your experience. They are in con

  • San Francisco

I've been living in SF since 2014 and I have to say Cost of Living is misrepresented. It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1

  • Montreal

Spent two years in Montreal. I have zero regrets and it was a lot of fun for a few years, but ultimately needed to leave. Pros: -Good variety of nightlife and activities. From clubs to cool bars to strip clubs, you can find it in Montreal. Drinking here is quite cheap. -Population feels very young in the city center due to multiple large universities. Other areas around are also full of young professionals. Lots of cool trendy areas. -Work to live not live to work attitudes. People in Montrea

Everything (and everyone haha) seems to be old. Not a kind of place to have fun and enjoy. Food is great, but pricey โ€” you can find the same or even better for a cheaper price in Buenos Aires. Legalization of marijuana isnโ€™t something good to celebrate in my opinion and just created a weird environment. There are better places to go.

  • Mexico City

I'm the one who left the review complaining about how people don't speak English 2-3 months ago. I think it's only fair to leave another review as I projected a pretty negative overall picture of the place. I came back a second time and boy, I'm glad I did. The language barrier didn't disappear, but I came with a different mindset and made efforts to learn some basic Spanish. Being able to explain how you want your coffee even makes a huge difference. Mexican people are kind and warm-hearted.

  • Cebu

I love Cebu so maybe I may seem biased but here's my perspective as an American who has spent many months, off and on, in Cebu. It is my other home. I have even owned a condo in Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu previously and a car there too. First, it's a big city and like any big city you need to be careful. I don't find Cebu to be unsafe. I've felt just as safe in Cebu as I do in my native Los Angeles (California, USA). Obviously don't do things like flash money or valuables, etc. Use common sense...

Visited the small, cute part of RIGA's old town and the ART NOUVEAU architecture that is located a bit outside the center. Seemed quite juvenile + full of tourists during the summer of JULY 2019. Has a bit of that ex-comunist era inside the city.
