I really enjoyed my month in Cuenca, but mostly because I wanted a chill place to focus on work and practice my Spanish. there isn't much to do, but it's very clean and safe and there's music everywhere. beautiful churches, people are very friendly (although very little English is spoke) and it's ridiculously cheap. they use the USD as official currency and it was easy to find a huge, hearty, multi-course lunch for $2.25. no joke. there are ice cream and pastry shops every few feet it seems. th

I have been living in Quito for almost 3 years, and at this moment in time, I can not recommend it as a travel or remote work destination. A number of high profile terrorist attacks have rocked the country, and the prevalence of random violence and kidnappings in urban areas is increasing. Drug trafficking has decreased safety throughout the country, and no one is out at night past 8 pm. The streets are literally empty once it gets dark. The salsa capital of the world. If you want to learn how to dance, go here. There are so many great places to learn and practice and at a fraction of learning anywhere else. The people are some of the most loving and kind people I've ever encountered. It's a bit of a party scene. You can also access the pacific very easily from Cali. The weather is always beautiful. I've moved here permanently. Kids are in an elite school for $600pm, and I'm the only non-Colombian parent. I'm surprised there aren't more foreigners. Going to Gringo Tuesdays is a very touristy thing, I only ever went once everyone is 25 and trying to get laid basically, and its P$11,000 a beer, my local pub sells beer for $P2,000 by comparison. The longer you are here the more you discover. The "centre" of the city is really from 83rd-93rd-115th roughly, 83rd has loads of great clubs and rest

Very bad place to visit right now. The country is in a time of political and civil unrest, with mass protests closing down airports, train stations, and roads since early December 2022 (it is now mid January 2023).
