I lived for 2.5 months in Kumbo, hours outside of Doula, in summer (their winter) 2009, doing feminist humanitarian aid work. If I could go back in time, I never would have gone as I developed chronic fatigue syndrome for 4.5 years starting during this trip, due to overvaccinating (several tropical diseases injected into me in a short time), the Malarone effects, poor diet, stress, etc. I stopped by Doula for a one night stay both when I arrived and when I left. Yes, it is expensive, but after a while I learned about affordable places to eat and realized I could choose neighborhoods farther from city center, and it would still be nice. City feels super safe, even at nigh! Internet is crazy fast (I got 500mb on my airbnb) there are tons to do and see and I did not encounter the super rude Parisians people talk so much about, mostly everyone spoke English and were very polite. It is not a good habit to go into a country for a short time, associate w/a small group who don’t represent the majority and write slanted comments from your limited perspective.

Streets are made of dirt. Horses still pull carts. Very little English spoken. You cannot easily find things you need so bring all your necessities to start with. I have barely seen a street light, the traffic can be unbelievable. It's the perfect place for a real cultural experience and to learn wolof and French. You almost have no choice but to when here. Food made by the family I stayed with is great. So far I've on

From the airport to getting settled in. Everyone is so helpful and warm hearted. Cost of living is very reasonable - 5€ to eat at a restaurant (fish, sides, wine and dessert). I highly recommend making contact with a local taxi driver. Its easy to set up a daily agreement for your time on the island. Spending 5€ a day to be taken into town and back to airbnb. I am sure you could get it much much cheaper but I was happy to pay a bit more

Poor design and low quality furniture. You won't find one that comes with a good desk and chair. Most of them don't have a good place to put one even if you bring your own. Hard water is common and unpleasant. Can't walk around due to small roads, traffic, sometimes unfriendly stray dogs. It does have good restaurants, lots of variety from many international cuisines. Not that great for Indonesian food though. Probably better for a short visit rather than
