I lived for 2.5 months in Kumbo, hours outside of Doula, in summer (their winter) 2009, doing feminist humanitarian aid work. If I could go back in time, I never would have gone as I developed chronic fatigue syndrome for 4.5 years starting during this trip, due to overvaccinating (several tropical diseases injected into me in a short time), the Malarone effects, poor diet, stress, etc. I stopped by Doula for a one night stay both when I arrived and when I left. Enjoyed every single second of the days spent there. The SME and tech start-up space is really buzzing and growing real fast. Yes, it is expensive, but after a while I learned about affordable places to eat and realized I could choose neighborhoods farther from city center, and it would still be nice. City feels super safe, even at nigh! Internet is crazy fast (I got 500mb on my airbnb) there are tons to do and see and I did not encounter the super rude Parisians people talk so much about, mostly everyone spoke English and were very polite. It is not a good habit to go into a country for a short time, associate w/a small group who don’t represent the majority and write slanted comments from your limited perspective.

From the airport to getting settled in. Everyone is so helpful and warm hearted. Cost of living is very reasonable - 5€ to eat at a restaurant (fish, sides, wine and dessert). I highly recommend making contact with a local taxi driver. Its easy to set up a daily agreement for your time on the island. Spending 5€ a day to be taken into town and back to airbnb. I am sure you could get it much much cheaper but I was happy to pay a bit more

Have been here for a month and there are plenty of things to do to keep you occupied, away from work. It's super safe, the food is only OK (but super cheap), the nature/hiking is great (city surrounded by mountains) and nightlife isn't bad at the moment even though clubs still aren't open. Highly recommend it to other nomads.

Canggu has so much energy and excitement. I think that's partly due to the cost of living plus the weather. People are very nice here but expect general life for the locals to revolve around tourism. You're not going to get an authentic Indonesian cultural experience. It's definitely not perfect and not an easy place to live but considering how cheap it is what can you expect? I think the pros outweigh the cons and cons are plentiful (dirty, cash soc
