Penang or Kuala Lumpur for three months?

in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia by @lena 8yr  | 8 comments

Hi!
We are currently planing to go to Malaysia for three months, but are unsure whether Penang or KL is the best fit for us.

Generally, we donโ€™t like big cities (e.g. Bangkok) too much, but we need to get some work done and need good wifi and a place that is easy to settle into. A modern, comfortable and private apartment for less than ยฑ2.500 MR is a requirement. Easy access to nature and good food (vegetarian) is more important than shopping or an active nightlife.

Any tips? Thanks for any help!

If you donโ€™t like big cities, forget KLโ€ฆ I lived recently in both places for 1-1 month, and wouldnโ€™t recommend KL for that long. Even in Penang I recommend choosing a calm place like Gelugor and first stay for a week then decide whether you like it or not.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies. We decided to give KL a shot and stay there for 3-4 weeks, but spend the majority of our time in Georgetown.

I would recommend Penang (Georgetown) over KL any day. Penang is really cute and does not have a โ€œbig city feelโ€ to it at all. Itโ€™s also a food paradise for us vegan/vegetarians - some of the best Indian food (and iโ€™ve been to India) Iโ€™ve had in my life has been in Little India, Penang.

Hi Lena

I was in KL for the last three months and one week in Penang after that. Basically I liked Penang. But I have only seen the heritage area where I stayed in a boutique hotel for 100 MYR a night (would have been 120 but I got it cheaper). I didnโ€™t check out the newly opened co-working space (forgot the name) as I didnโ€™t have much time and there was pretty good wifi in the hotel. I think you can save time of commuting if you stay in Penang, compared to KL. Especially if you donโ€™t like big cities (unlike me  ) it makes sense to go to Penang. Things are cheaper there (not sure about apartments), air is better, sea is closer and nicer (didnโ€™t check out beaches though), traffic is ok (especially in the heritage area which is really quite and relaxing, as well as pretty!).

In KL I found a modern and nice apartment for 2500 MYR near the skytrain (LRT) in Petaling Jaya, about 20 min away from the main station, but not through Airbnb as they are usually more expensive on there. I found an agent which was willing to find an apartment for me. Normally they donโ€™t do below 6 months, but she negotiated with the owner and got it for 2,5! If you want her contact, let me know. A few pics on my German language blog post here: https://www.addor.ch/phil/kl-living/

I"d be interested to know too. Iโ€™ve been to KL a few times so was thinking about a few months in Penang next year. From looking on Airbnb, a decent apartment is easier to get in KL but I have no idea what itโ€™d be like when you are on the ground.

I have found KL a very easy city to settle into and had no trouble with wifi but then Iโ€™ve only needed light usage.

Foreigner owned Coworking business in Malaysia

in Malaysia by @newyam 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.

Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.
Cheers

Anybody around Europe over the next few months?

by @paulrose 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

Hi All

Soโ€ฆ a few months ago when I was in Asia, for some reason I decided that it was gonna be too hot over the summer months and I wanted to mix it up with a few months touring Europe. So I had the idea to buy and RV and drive round for a few months.

Meet Teagan

Itโ€™s taken a few months going through the process of getting my license to drive the RV, because itโ€™s so large it wasnโ€™t covered on my standard driving license. Add to that, I had some solar panels fitted for unlimited power, and a massive satellite dish for internet wherever I go.

Iโ€™ve now got my ferry booked out of the UK for September 11th and at the moment have no plans past the first few weeks.

Has anyone on here done anything similar before? Any places recommended, or anyone around Europe over the next few months?

Iโ€™m doing about 3 months worth before heading to Vegas for NYE and around the states for a few months after that before back to Asia for a bit.

Places to stay in Georgetown, Penang for a month?

in Georgetown , Guyana by @florianbuerger 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi fellow nomads,

my wife and I are traveling to Georgetown in October. We are looking for a small apartment with a kitchen, as we donโ€™t want to eat out every day. Airbnb is pretty scarce or pretty expensive, e.g. 1,000 EUR/month an up.

Do you have any recommendations? We plan to work at @CAT but the room/apartment should have WiFi as well. Our budget is around 700 EUR per month, no shared bathrooms and a balcony would be awesome.

Cheers,
Florian

Where should we live in Colombia for six months?

in Colombia by @supernoveau 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

Hola!

My girlfriend and I are working and slow travelling through Central and South America. We usually live in each location for around three to six months. For instance, weโ€™ve been living on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala for nearly six months now.

Weโ€™re planning our next location in Central and South America to rent for six months and weโ€™re hearing great things about Colombia.

Weโ€™d like to live in a safe and quiet natural location with friendly locals, a comfortable climate and have access to quality produce (food).

Can anyone recommend where we can live? Any tips on rentals would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Anyone familiar with fluentin3months?

by @erikbenjamin 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

I was wondering if there are people familiar with the website fluentin3months.com? Benny Lewis, founder of Fluent in 3 Months, says that this is a faster and smarter way to learn a language. With language hacking, you can learn a new language in months (3) or years Instead.

In my case Iโ€™m looking for an English course that allows me to communicate better in English :map: :globe_with_meridians: Is this what you think I need?

Does anybody have experience with setting up an offshore company and bank account in Labuan (Malaysia)

in Malaysia by @nomads_and_drifters 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi there,
We are a husband and wife who travel a lot and have a small company set up in Fiji. We offer services to clients all over the world, but the Fijian banking system isnโ€™t very accommodating for a digital based business with a lot of overseas expenses.

To make our life easier we are planning to set up an offshore company and bank account in Labuan.
We have a Fijian, Belgium and Uk passport but have residency in Fiji.

Does anybody have experience with a situation like this? and any advice how to go about setting up an offshore company and bank account ideally in Labuan (or Singapore)?

Iโ€™m particularly looking for web entrepreneurs but if you have suggestions to meet any other entrepreneurs, Iโ€™ll be glad to read it
Thanks for all your answers,

What are the best/non-tourist places in Malaysia in Jan?

in Malaysia by @kathrynoh 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning on travelling from Australia to the UK in Jan. I booked flights with a stopover in Malaysia for 2 weeks planning on going to Penang for that but wasnโ€™t thinking that itโ€™ll be peak tourist season!

Since I hate being in busy places, I am now reconsidering and wondered if there was anywhere with decent working spaces/cafes/accommodation that wonโ€™t be too overcrowded. The alternative is to just hang out in KL. Iโ€™ve been there a few times and wanted to try somewhere new but maybe holing up and having a work โ€œbootcampโ€ for the two weeks might be a better idea

What's a good place in Malaysia near the beach?

in Malaysia by @bobz_zg 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Anyone can suggest some place in Malaysia where could I rent some affordable place ( < 30$ US/d) and be near the beach. What I need is:

  • decent room with daily cleaning
  • 4G reception
  • some night life around, like where there are few bars to hang out when my head is

I came from Phuket week ago to KL, was 100m from the beach for 1 month.
O what a depression when I came to a shitty hotel in KL, I wanted to turn around and go back to Thailand. O, my Buddha!

How to find a room in Cluj-Napolca for 2 months?

in Cluj , Romania by @sharee32 9yr 9 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello!
I am considering to spend sometime in Cluj from around August. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to find an affordable room? Or maybe even have a spare room? It should be as cheap as possible, but I also donโ€™t need much. A bed and wifi are almost enoug. toilet and small kitchen would also be nice. Shared flat would also be fine.

Every hint is appreciated!

Where to stay in the USA for 6 months? Vegas, California? Something else?

in Cali , Colombia by @yesmad 9yr 9 years ago  | 21 comments

My girlfriend and I are Canadian nomads looking to spend 6 months (ideally) in the US this winter. Weโ€™re trying to figure out the best place to do so! The goal is to live somewhere nice and build up more savings and income.

Since weโ€™re in Montreal and sick of the brutal winters, we want somewhere warm. And since weโ€™re nomading, weโ€™re looking to stay as cheap as possible, but also comfortable. Weโ€™d like to do a short-term (furnished) rental as opposed to a hotel or room rental since weโ€™re a couple.

We also want to live somewhere nice enough, not in a dangerous area or anything like that. We like parks, shopping, farmerโ€™s markets, etc. Not too big on night life.

Ideally, weโ€™d like somewhere in California, but Iโ€™m not sure how realistic that is for our budget ($1500/month rent at the max).

As of now weโ€™ve also looked at Las Vegas, which seems on the more affordable end of the spectrum. Austin was also on our radar, but again, not sure how realistic that is for our budget.

The biggest problem we have is actually finding available rentals online! We need something furnished! Doing anything through Craigslist online is out, and I know most people will suggest AirBNB, but it seems rather inflated in price. Other than that, there seems to be only private websites that are just as difficult (or untrustworthy looking) as Craigslist.

Can anyone point us in the right direction? Where would you guys suggest in our situation? Anyone from Vegas/California/Austin that could point us in the right direction for furnished short-term housing?

This seems like a really great community! I hope someone out there can help us out!

Hi there,

Iโ€™ve been asked by a company to travel and work abroad to experience the digital nomad lifestyle and to write about it. Actually to do research about it. So Iโ€™ll be in KL from August 21 to August 25. If anyone is up for a drink: Iโ€™d love to meet you and hear your story. Suggestions for workspaces are welcome too. Staying near the Petronas towers.

Cheers from the Netherlands!

FYI: Protests in Kuala Lumpur on 29 and 30 August 2015

in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia by @liztai 9yr 9 years ago  | 0 comments

Hello everyone,
Not a question per se but just a note to those of you in Kl this month. There will be a huge protest called Bersih at the end of the month. You have the rare opportunity to see democracy in action. Still, do be careful as the police here are tear gas happy so be armed with water n salt if you are out and about the city on that day.

there may be road blocks and traffic jams too.

For more info

Malaysians are a friendly bunch so you will not get any problems from them.

The police, on the other handโ€ฆ

What's the best visa strategy for US citizen staying in Bali for 5-6 months?

by @nihilista 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

From what Iโ€™ve researched I can get a Visa on arrival and then extend that by another 60 days. (Is it around $60-70 for the original plus extension?)

But what about if I would like to plan for staying longer - should I get the 60 day visa that I can extend for 120 days?

Also, what is the process for extending the Visa? Do I need to leave the country to do so? In the first scenario, with the 30 day VOA and addโ€™l 30 day extension, is it possible to stay longer by leaving and then coming back? Is there a limit for how many days one needs to leave the country and how many times this process can be repeated in any given time period (i.e. a year)?

Thanks very much for any help / advice / information!
