What features would be useful to you in a city check-in app for nomads?

by @lucasjgordon 9yr  | 7 comments

Iโ€™m creating an iOS app that allows users to check in and get information about cities when they arrive. The app lists other nomads in the city, and users can follow each other and get alerts when the nomads they follow check into new cities.

I grew up travelling, but have been in London for the last few years. My girlfriend and I are planning to adopt the nomad life later this year, but Iโ€™m not currently a nomad and I desperately want this app to be relevant and useful so I need your guysโ€™ help to understand what problems it should address. What would be useful for you when arriving in a new city? e.g. a map of hotspots, contact numbers for accommodation, taxi contact numbers etc?

I 2nd android. Or, at least, have it as a webapp too so you can access it from anything.

I could definitely manage a web app as an interim solution. I see one of the key value propositions of this app as being the ability to see who is currently in a city, and I donโ€™t want to limit the number of people who can check in. So a web interface to support this is definitely part of the plan, to help DropAnchor become the definitive directory of who is where.

Thank you Joe! This is great feedback, coffee shops and coworking spaces definitely seem to be popular choices. I didnโ€™t think about gyms and pay as you go deals, that seems to be a sensible option. I wonder if there is something like [Copass][1] for gyms? If not, someone should totally make itโ€ฆ

If this does well, Android will definitely be on the roadmap. I donโ€™t have any experience on the platform myself, but hopefully I can get this off the ground and get someone on board to help out

Coworking spaces
Gyms with short term contracts - pay as you go deals
Options for getting online - mobile WiFi, pre paid data plans etc
Best worker coffee shops

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply, I really appreciate your feedback! Iโ€™ve gone through each point and added to the list of potential features

I think the structure of the app is starting to take shape. So far the general consensus is that when people check into a city they want to see a list of nomads who are already there, a list of reliable amenities and a list of things to do. I guess I will need to gather all of this data from nomads who are in or have been to these different cities, which sounds like a fun challenge!

I guess the main value here is benefitting from the data collected by people who have been to these locations and done the research already like you say, and having the ability to reach out to people already there for help while on the move.

Thank you again for your feedback! Iโ€™m putting together a mailing list here, so please add your email if youโ€™re interested in hearing how the project comes along! Iโ€™ll be looking for people to help test the app soon. Good luck with catching your next bus, that system sounds like a nightmare!

@karene 9yr

First off, thanks for the work to create an app like this. Could be very, very useful.

Including the locations one would use for longer stays would be great, applying the same type of categorization you find with restaurants and bars to hospitals, grocery stores, banks, police stations, etc.

For example, where to find a good obgyn, general practice in case you get sick, emergency room (I went to an emergency room recently that was AWFULโ€ฆ Iโ€™d hardly call it an emergency room and itโ€™d be great for me to warn other nomads away from that place). As for grocery stores, charting where you can get hard-to-find products (vegan, organic, Mexican products, American products, Chinese products, etc). I lived for 4 months in a place before finally finding tofu. I tend to burn out on the research end of things and just take what I can get thatโ€™s easy to access, but itโ€™d be great to have the details like this easily accessible through an app.

Also, public transportation customs. For example, in some places they have public cars that function the same as buses, would be great to have a repository of all the local knowledge regarding those details, rather than having to skim 4 forum threads from 1999 to piece together the picture. Where I am currently there arenโ€™t actual stops, you signal to the driver with your hand from anywhere along their route. You have to know the routes too so you can tell them which route you want so you signal โ€œthat-a-wayโ€ or โ€œthis-a-wayโ€. Stuff like that, you know.

Taxi numbers are a great idea. Hotspots for nomads would be cool, and it would be great to know what websites locals use (if any) to find whatโ€™s happening.

Language schools with reviews from students.

Also maybe a place for posting companies that hire international folks (call centers, etc), in case people are looking for jobs too.

Those are a lot of ideas. Take what you like and leave what you donโ€™t! Excited to see the app!

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

What is the best way to approach Taiwan?

in Taiwan by @zoxel 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

We have never been in Taiwan (a couple of travelers) and I am just wondering is possible to find there some quite clean place to hang for a while? How it is better to start? Are there any websiteโ€™s for short and long term rentals? It looks like AirBnB is not that popular there. So it seems that usual tactics - rent hotel or airbnb for short term and then look for long term just driving around might not work. It looks like everything there in Chinese - so if there are any tips how to overcome this - that is more then welcome  Overall just interested in any suggestion - where best to go first? Also is it hard to extend your stay there - we are digital nomads - so working for some company overseas and probably will be extending as a tourist (If we like there).
Sorry for so many questions - but this is really some terra incognita for me

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brmolin 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari , Italy by @mitch_dina 5yr 5 years ago  | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

What's the best mobile-data option in New Zealand for nomads?

Hi All! Iโ€™ve heard Spark and Vodafone are the best. I plan to move around, so I care mostly about having good coverage, and all Iโ€™ll need is around 1 GB of data or so.

Any suggestions?

Is Three's 'Go Roam' package any good for British nomads?

by @alexnapierholland 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hey, Three in the UK offer a โ€˜Go Roamโ€™ package that - at first glance - looks good for nomads.

It essentially promises data use abroad, up to 12GB,

Iโ€™d link to Threeโ€™s FAQ for Go Roam, but as Iโ€™m a new user I canโ€™t.

Bali/Indonesia and Australia are both included, which are top destinations for me.

Thailand is not, which may be annoying.

I could do with a new iPhone before I leave for Bali again in January and as Iโ€™ve been launching a new business, am a bit short on cash.

Unsure if this is a good solution, or if it makes more sense to sit-it-out on my iPhone 6 until I can buy an iPhone XS Max with cash and stick whatever SIM I want in it.

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!
