The water is perfectly safe to drink. It's more trustworthy than the water in my city back in the States. The air quality is not good at all. If you go by Plume, you will see what days you should engage in outside activities. The ride from the airport is a little wild, so Dramamine may be useful. Uber is illegal, but it's the best way to not get ripped off by your driver (taxis used to get me all the time), just make sure you sit in the front. Be sure to check your route once you're out of your Uber to make sure you didn't get scammed as well (this has only happened to me twice). Your trip should end when you get out of the Uber. Good neighborhoods for foreigners include the following: El Poblado (expensive, good night life), Laureles (more authentic, good street night life), Envigado (farther away from some cool areas, but very chill, more authentic, cheaper), Guayubal, and more. No matter how good the AirBNBs downtown look, just don't do it. Don't be on your phone outside at night. Put it away and you'll probably be fine. The internet is fine! I work every day on the internet and have never had any trouble in any neighborhood. Food can be very cheap outside of El Poblado. Other than the amazing fruit selection, the food is bland in most restaurants. Spice is not really a thing here. Last thoughts: cars will not stop for pedestrians, go salsa dancing every night, and you can find a cheap gym - just keep looking!

What an amazing city! I've been working remotely here for a month, it's probably the most fun I've ever had in a month! Beautiful parks, great nightlife, friendly people, walkable city, plenty of activities / events going on, interesting nearby cities to visit, speaking Spanish not really required etc. I've been working from a WeWork and living out of hostels. The WeWorks here are pretty standard, good work environment at a reasonable price (250 euros / month for hot desking). The hostels have been great, stayed in 5 so far, the best were Sungate and Hostel One, definitely check those out if visiting. Very easy to meet people at these hostels. The nightlife is second to none. Even compared to London where I'm usually based, the nightlife here is wild. The only issue I found is that everything happens much later than the U.K. People have dinner around 9pm, go out 11:30pm and back in the not so early hours of the morning. This can make waking up at 8am for work a little difficult! I've visited a couple of nearby cities, my favourite was Toledo, a 30 minute bus ride away. Definitely worth checking out. Plenty of stuff to do in Madrid - outdoor swimming pools, parks, free outdoor gyms, rooftop bars, museums, art galleries, etc. I've been here a month and still have loads of stuff I want to do. The temperature has been a bit rough. Regularly late 30's means I'm constantly looking for shade when walking about. I've barely got a tan because I'm in the shade so often. The temperature in the evenings is pleasant, around 9pm. I've been here since the beginning of July, so nearly peak heat season. I'm learning some Spanish but definitely a beginner. Most people from Madrid speak decent English, I've come into difficulty when trying to talk to people from South America, usually their English isn't so strong. Overall I highly recommend visiting Madrid. I much prefer it to Barcelona as a place to live. I'm surprised it's not rated higher on NomadList! It beats Amsterdam, Stockholm and San Francisco, all places I've worked from over the last couple years.

  • Stockholm

Just got back from spending a month in Stockholm (Feb-Mar), enjoyed the experience but perhaps went at the wrong time of the year as the weather was a bit wet / cold. Was staying in hostels (~$30/night) and met some really interesting people - hostels were busy during the weekends but only about 30% full during weekdays (probably due to time of year). Found the city about as expensive as London (where I'm from). City was very clean, easy to walk around and people were friendly with perfect English (and more than happy to speak in English). I worked in SUP46 co-working space (free to work in the hot-desking area) and cafe's around the city (Espresso House was a good option). I looked at a few different co-working spaces but most were pay-monthly, which maybe I would have picked if I was living there longer. My biggest issue was that there didn't seem to be much going on, I went to a few museums (recommend the Vasa museum) and explored some parks on the weekends (good for running around), however after the first couple of weeks, I ran out of things to see / do in my spare time. In the summer, I imagine people would go hiking around Stockholm, however the weather didn't allow me to. Nightlife was okay, there is a great pub crawl called "Stockholm Pub Crawl", which is on every Friday and Saturday, highly recommend going as you'll meet some really interesting people. I ended up going on it a few times. Nightlife on weekdays seemed pretty dead. Final point about weather, it was a little cold (-3 degrees C) when I got there and snowed / rained quite a few days, but was getting better by the time I left. I'd recommend going between April and September, as outside of these months it does get very dark and cold. Overall, a city worth checking out (probably the best city out of Norway, Sweden and Finland) but not for longer than 4 weeks.

A lot more things to do there on Summer than on Winter, even though the city is beautiful both seasons. Wouldn't recommend going there in the beginning of spring or late autumn since it'd be mostly rainy and cold. On Summer I recommend just walking around the city and checking out all the architecture and drinking beer on the beach of Hietalahti or taking a ferry to Suomenlinna and having a picnic day there. Linnanmรคki amusement park is also nice if you are traveling with children. On Winter I recommend you leave the city center and go to f.ex. Mustikkamaa or Central Park. There are places where you can ice skate.
