Are there any coworking spaces on Thailand's islands? Ideally on Ko Samui or Ko Phangan?

in Ko Samui, Thailand by @rich | 6yr  | 9 comments

Hi to all Nomads living on Ko Samui or Ko Phangan!

Are there any good coworking spaces on the islands of Thailand? (I only found one in Ko Lanta, but nothing on the Eastern islands like Ko Samui or Ko Phangan where I would like to stay.)
If not, what are the best internet cafes to work comfortably and quietly?
How fast and how reliable is the internet connection?

Thanks so much!

Any new co-working spaces & cafes since this thread was opened (in dec '14)?

Info on Ko Samui & Ko Phangan is great, but also on other islands having new co-working spaces.

Thanks

A good friend of the Ninjas hacker collective (Loren aka 6Q) owns a hostel on Koh Samui. It is called Backpacker Hostel. Here are the details: https://www.facebook.com/BackpackerHostelSamui?rf=582099511858459

This is a great place to use as a starting point because itโ€™s very cheap, is a super friendly crowd, and (being hacker owned and operated) has fast reliable Internet (inasmuch as this is possible, bearing in mind that youโ€™re on a small island in Thailand, a country currently governed by the army who recently took power in a coup). If you want to enjoy the Full Moon Party, 6Q also owns another hostel on Koh Phangan and itโ€™s very easy to bounce between the two.

There are plenty of places to stay on Koh Samui, but landing in a friendly, laid-back place that is hacker owned and operated, with an American owner who knows how to organize everything youโ€™ll need and can solve essentially any problem youโ€™re likely to have is invaluable. I canโ€™t recommend this place highly enough.

hey rich!

If you go to Ko Samui, check out Son F Beach! Itโ€™s a bar-coworking space owned by a Russian designer. Itโ€™s small but cozy, with coworking upstairs and bar downstairs. Mostly Russian expats or travelers work there.
The price is 200THB/day, drink included.

I prefer coffee shops, however. Iโ€™ve been โ€œnomadingโ€ mostly at The Islander in Chaweng, Ko Samui. Itโ€™s in a crowded street, ~17Mbps internet, although it goes down for a few seconds sometimes.

@DavidSidhom, thanks for the links! I just arrived on Phangan, and canโ€™t wait to check you computer-keyboard-banging fellow travelers

Hey Rich,

Iโ€™ve been working remotely on Koh Phangan for a few years now. There are co-working spaces starting to set up, the first is set to open soon and I can imagine more will follow!

http://kohspace.com/ (set to open mid January 2015!) Is located in Ban Tai area.

Theres a few groups on Face-a-book worth following for updates on this right nowโ€ฆ

As for internet cafes and other places to work around the island, I can suggest a few places on your visit. Of course it is also possible to find suitable housing / rent with wifi for longer staysโ€ฆthe quality of internet varies of course.

I would recommend getting one of those AIS pocket wifiโ€™s too.

UPDATE
If anyone would like some insider info on Koh Phangan and best places to work / rent / play - Iโ€™m happy to help, you can call me on +66 (0) 990 028 714 or send me a PM

Chok dee na krap good luck!

David

Someone had been running an email signup list for a space on Koh Samui but now I canโ€™t find it. I thought it was something like kohworking_com or some coworking play on Kohโ€ฆ

Personally I love Haad Tian/Yuan/Why Nam if you can get away from the increasingly frequent and long all night blasting musicโ€ฆ Sanctuary has decent pay by volume internet for cafe style work, and Dtac reaches bungalows on the ridges (Bamboo/Beam). True wasnโ€™t as good as Dtac last time I was this, no idea about AISโ€ฆ YMMV.

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint | 1mo 1 month ago | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 | 5mo 4 months ago | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard | 9mo 9 months ago | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

How is Bansko, Bulgaria?

in Bansko, Bulgaria by @sebastian88 | 1yr 1 year ago | 5 comments

I see that there are a whopping 200 nomads in Bansko, Bulgaria. Iโ€™m in Sofia, but aside from Bansko being cheap, I get the feeling that itโ€™s a retirement centre in the summer time. I saw a few Youtube vids but it looks dead. Whatโ€™s the draw to Bansko right now? Is there nightlife, or is it just a place to go hiking? Are there decent work cafeโ€™s? Is it a decent place for singles?

Since itโ€™s a hotspot Iโ€™d love to see some reviews on the page.

Thanks!

Ko Lanta or Ko Phangan - which island is better for a digital nomad?

in Ko Lanta, Thailand by @melinda | 1yr 1 year ago | 6 comments

Iโ€™m currently in Penang, Malaysia and I was thinking to head to Thailand next. What are the best islands in Thailand to get some work done? I was considering either Ko Lanta or Ko Phangan because those both islands have coworking spaces. I might need to take some client calls, also video. Is the wifi good enough? Are there any other differences between the islands?

Where should I register my company as a digital nomad? Singapore, Hong Kong?

in Singapore by @raphadk | 2yr 1 year ago | 14 comments

Hey guys, hereโ€™s a question Iโ€™ve been asking nomads I meet everywhere, but still havenโ€™t found good information. My startups mostly focus on american and european markets but I donโ€™t have a registered company, nor I live permanently on any of these countries.

I get the cash payments online in paypal (or adsense) and transfer it to Thailand (or Malaysia, or Bali, or Brazil, or wherever Iโ€™m at). The thing isโ€ฆ for low volume living expenses it seems fine, but as I scale the business, Iโ€™m starting to think more and more about fiscal law.

A fellow nomad told me to transfer it to Singapore, Hong Kong or The Virgin Islands, and then use an international credit card anywhere. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s the best way to optimize thisโ€ฆ any ideas?

Also, could there be any problems in selling to these countries without a registered local company?

Foreigner owned Coworking business in Malaysia

in Malaysia by @newyam | 2yr 1 year ago | 0 comments

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.

Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.
Cheers
Yamin

How to find a short-term (2-3 weeks) in Koลกice?

in Kosice, Slovakia by @adamnowek | 2yr 2 years ago | 0 comments

Hi nomads! Iโ€™m planning to head to Koลกice in May for a few weeks, both to work and to watch some hockey (the World Championships are being co-hosted in the city). Weโ€™ve tried looking into places to stay the usual ways (Airbnb, Booking.com, et al) but it looks like the city is completely sold out during the dates of the hockey tournament.

Does anyone know of any other resources for finding a place in Koลกice? Or does anyone happen to have an apartment to rent out if they want to avoid the onslaught of thousands of hockey fans? :stuck_out_tongue:

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @adele | 3yr 2 years ago | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.

Where to live in Shikoku, Japan?
