Best ways to get travel/nomad companions in different locations?

by @madelineb 7yr  | 24 comments

Hi,
Do nomads like to travel together? I mean, not in each otherโ€™s pockets, but look for accomodation together, meet with each other daily or regularly, help out in new cities, motivate/inspire each other in the business? Iโ€™ve done nomad lifestyle in the past in 2009/2014 and this time I want to collaborate and support with other people, each on their own mission. I love this nomad endeavour but to be honest I admit it can be quite time-consuming and lonely.
*Message on NomadList locations?
*Message on Couchsurfing groups? (without sounding like Tinder!)
*Message on other??
Iโ€™m currently in Portugal and heading back to Estonia for January/February (Iโ€™m from Australia). Later in 2017 I am open to places, though Iโ€™m not keen on high pollution, high humidity, high cost cities.
Feedback, interest or ideas welcome!
Thanks, :sunny: Madeline

@madelineb @Jacob_Tr before you write off coworking/coliving spaces, Iโ€™d really recommend checking out @eduโ€™s coliving project (sunandco). I spent a couple weeks there last year and had a fantastic time. Iโ€™m totally a 1-on-1 person and still had a great time meeting (and hiking, cayaking, dining etc etc with) some interesting, open people (with varied personality types).
Edu & Jon take great care of the place & their guests and they are really well priced.

Hello @madelineb & @Jacob_Tr

I hope youโ€™re doing great.

Things are going very well here, a lot of learnings, work and fun

I just wanted to know what your future plans are. Is Sun and Co. part of them?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Iโ€™ve just started my Nomad journey, started in 20 days ago. Have gone from Singapore, Finland, Iceland, London and tomorrow too Barcelona. - So far it has been good, I am starting to feel the lonely feeling as my week of being completely alone in London comes to an end. - I am also from Australia. - What the most isolating part I find is that your walking around a city full of people working and doing the 9-5, at some points here in London I felt home was more nomadic like.

I havenโ€™t brought myself to going to Nomad co-working spaces, I am not good when there is a big room of People, it daunts me. I prefer 1 on 1 interactions. - I could do it though if I went with someone. There is a company called roam.co, very tempted to try them - I just feel this pressure to be bright and energetic / excitement and confident if I ever go to one of them, so I feel these nomad groups really only fit certain types of personalities.

Iโ€™m starting to get inspired to start something that is less pressure, something thatโ€™ll get those working in cafes alone, working together. Hmmmm

Hi @Jacob_Tr! Youโ€™ve been to alot of places in the 20 days! I assume itโ€™s for work. I can understand about what youโ€™re saying about coliving or coworking spaces that it doesnโ€™t suit everyone. Iโ€™m also more 1-on-1 person but need social interaction. In Australia the work environment is more โ€œsocialisedโ€, aka camaraderie, which has its good and bad points, but different to Europe. I find that I need to mix my work locations between coworking spaces, home and cafes, in order to get the most productivity and feel comfortable. Itโ€™s more expensive however because Iโ€™m paying for a coworking desk that I donโ€™t always use. Some locations offer part-time desks.
Your idea is like Tinder for workers with flexible work conditions at cafes? Sounds good.

Iโ€™ve been running a coliving space for the last year and a half and what I learnt is the importance of family feeling in the house. Coworking spaces, Couchsurfing meetups, etc. none of them makes you belong to a group of like-minded people as a coliving space does.
Thatโ€™s my opinion and recommendation

I think itโ€™s hard to plan to travel together as every nomad has their own preferences on how they spend the day, hours of work, length of stay and budget.
The only nomads I have seen traveling together are couples. Interesting topic though, I struggle with it as well.

@elid1979 Definitely agree itโ€™s hard to travel together. Sometimes having a โ€œpartner in crimeโ€ can be really beneficial (like a gym buddy!). Iโ€™m a bit of an idealist and think there are some things to agree on thoughโ€ฆ like where to live in the city, how often to meet up (unless renting together), what weekend trips to do together, etc. Just needs two (or more) people with common location and compatible personalities.

@Ani what would be a reasonable price, letโ€™s see, 1 week in a coliving space?

๐Ÿ‘
1
๐Ÿ‘Ž
๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘Ž

That would be hard for me to say as I make a point of living as close to local prices as I can. Currently I spent โ‚ฌ250 per month (or โ‚ฌ58 per week) on rent and all bills (water, electricity, etc.) Then I spend around โ‚ฌ200 a month (~โ‚ฌ47 a week) on groceriesโ€ฆ But I would want to get my own groceries and take care of my own food as Iโ€™m a vegetarian and I like to eat when I feel like it (Iโ€™m very adverse to scheduling). Iโ€™m about to move somewhere where Iโ€™m going to spend more on my rent - โ‚ฌ340 a month (about โ‚ฌ80 a week), but itโ€™s very, very nice and I will no longer need to rent a desk in a co-working office. Thatโ€™s the upper range of my normal budget. If Iโ€™m going to splurge, I can go up to โ‚ฌ700 a month (โ‚ฌ163 a week), but when I do that I canโ€™t do anything else (other than buy my groceries and even there I have to be careful), so it makes life pretty miserable.

I would have been a nomad anyway, but I should point out that one of the reasons I left home (the UK) was that I simply could not afford to live there. Iโ€™m a creative - as in a creative in the literature industry, not marketing (which is far more lucrative) - so my income is not great and life can be precarious at times!

@Ani thank you so much for such a lovely paragraph in detail.
I love to see honest people. The primary asset of a coliving space is neither the bedroom nor the coworking space with fast internet; itโ€™s mainly the community of like-minded people and the work of the hosts taking care of the people and making guests connect to each other.

I think thatโ€™s the main reason why is more expensive a coliving space than renting your own apartment.

Going to meetups has worked for us. Couchsurfing meetups and nomad meetups for the most part. These arenโ€™t there in every city but on the plus side, locals in smaller places are friendlier so you can actually hang out with them

Also, coworking spaces have worked well for meeting people. But to travel togetherโ€ฆ hmmโ€ฆ doesnโ€™t happen often for me.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

What are wise ways to handle health insurance, as a USA person

by @azurio 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi! Iโ€™m still struggling to figure out how to handle health insurance.

What handy guides have you found to help figure out USA health care?

Iโ€™m struggling with:

  • When itโ€™s okay/wise to go without coverage while abroad, these days.
  • What other type of insurance I want while traveling, and whether it needs to be a supplement to USA insurance or if it can be a replacement.
  • Etc.

Above all, I think I want out. I wonder about success stories in moving to some other system/location, and the method youโ€™d recommend: additional citizenship, a special visa, etc.

I have searched this topic and struggled with it, so summaries and clarity are super helpful. I appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks so much!

How do you manage working in different time zones?

by @clusk 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

For those constrained by their businessโ€™ time zone, how do you manage this?

My home office is in Los Angeles โ€“ though I could swing anything in Central/South America, Iโ€™m looking at going to Lisbon or Chiang Mai for a bit. Both of them are >=8hrs difference potentially wreaking havoc on the work + social life + sleep split. This is a common question for nomads but there doesnโ€™t seem to be a lot of posting on the site about it.

What do you guys think? Any Americans working in Asia or Europe that does it well? I could likely negotiate with my supervisor to work in Eastern standard if I was in Lisbon/Europe, which wouldnโ€™t be too much of a stretch. Noon 'til 8pm. A bit more manageable than Chiang Mai or Bali.

What are the best ways to find an apartment in Barcelona?

Lots of nomads in and headed to Barcelona. Letโ€™s create a central place for resources, guides and sites for finding an apartment.

Iโ€™m headed there in April for 1-3 months (argh, Schengen!). So far Craigslist and Spotahome seem useful. What else is there?

Also any thoughts on neighborhoods would be great here. Right now Iโ€™m looking at Gracia which seems to be the spot. Probably avoid Barrio Gotico and Barceloneta due to masses of tourists. Iโ€™ve heard some good things about El Bornโ€ฆ thoughts?

Iโ€™m looking into visa requirements for Indonesia and Thailand (our first two stops) and itโ€™s looking like Iโ€™ll need to show proof of onward air tickets out of both countries to be allowed in. Is that true in practice?

If so, Iโ€™m curious how other nomads manage it โ€“ do you just buy cheap tickets out that youโ€™re OK with not using to satisfy the requirement? Or do you chance it?

Living and working in two very different time zones

by @rwill007 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

If you are living and working out of Thailand (UTC+07:00) but work with people in the New York EST (UTC-05:00) Time Zone, how do you deal / handle the time difference and still be able to enjoy or make the most of the experience without turning into a tired night owl zombie?

Better yet, what do you find to be the benefits / drawbacks of having to work on such a schedule? (specially in Thailand)

Any advice from those who have done it for a long time? (2+ months)

Thanks,
