Other places like Ubud, Chiang Mai, Vienna, Prague...?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @rich | 4yr  | 10 comments

Hi,
weโ€™re having trouble deciding where to go in the fall (September, October, November) or over the winter for that matter. We loved Chiang Mai, Ubud, Vienna, Prague, Lisbon and weโ€™re looking for a similar place to stay for 1-2 months. Weโ€™ll be in Germany and have a car. We wanted to go to Italy, but weโ€™re not getting excited about any place in particular - or we just donโ€™t know where to go. Any ideas?

What do we like? Pleasant weather, open minded people (whose eyes donโ€™t fall out when they see a black girl), healthy food (in restaurants and supermarkets) with vegetarian options, a chill vibe. Nice rentals (we use Airbnb a lot). A nice compromise between nature and not feeling like youโ€™re in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and no bugs or mosquitos please (they love us, but our bodies hate them. We get huge welts that stay for weeks).

Thanks!
Rich & Chinny

If you are looking to get out of the city, focus on your work, and eat great local food, I run a modern coworking space set in rural surrounding. Its called Mokrin House and its a bit different than all the other coworking and coliving spaces out there. You can also check out our Instagram feed.

I dont like self promotion but this might be a cool thing for you.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Ivan

Thanks! What did you like about Malta and Catania? About us: we usually care more about farmers markets or parks etc rather than the sights of a place. Rule of thumb: If you wouldnโ€™t want to do or see something every week, weโ€™re less likely to care much for it.

You mostly described โ€œall over Italyโ€ if you ask me. Rome is amazing to meโ€ฆ the vatican, the coliseum, thousands of years of history hiding around every corner. If youโ€™ve never been to Venice, you should see that for a couple days. As for a place to stay for a while, I canโ€™t imagine youโ€™d do poorly finding a location that calls to you a bit in Tuscanyโ€ฆ

That said, if Italy doesnโ€™t turn you on at all โ€ฆ Spain is incredible to me. Weโ€™re setting up shop in Barcelona in a couple weeksโ€ฆ last summer, we traveled all over Spain (airbnbโ€™s mostly) and were just blown away with Madrid, Sevilla, Granada and many of the beaches. Southern Spain was 35-40 degrees celsius during th summer - I canโ€™t imagine itโ€™s โ€˜coldโ€™ in the fall. Barcelona is really itโ€™s own thingโ€ฆ yes, itโ€™s in Spain - but not really a โ€œSpanish Cityโ€. Cosmopolitan โ€ฆ and as the capital of Catalonia holding itโ€™s own separate culture. (Then again, Grenada/Madrid/Sevilla very much had diverse architecture, history, and culture as well.)

Itโ€™s been a while since weโ€™ve been to Italy - so airbnb wasnโ€™t a thing yet.
Weโ€™re living in Costa Rica right now - and specifically decided not to move to Italy long term b/c we heard it was a bit slow moving and weโ€™re wanting to get back to a fast moving city life again. That said, I think there are many places there that lend themselves to โ€œnature nearby but not the middle of nowhereโ€.

Hope this helped a bit

Verone looks nice. I would like to be in Rome tooโ€ฆ

Otherwise try Lisboaโ€ฆ Ljubljana is cute but maybe too small/calm.

In Bali I prefer Canggu above Ubud.

Good cities, but in my opinion expecting good weather for those months is a big gamble. Sometimes September/October can feel warm, but most of the time itโ€™s when the wind picks up and it starts getting colder.

Yep. Better to get out of Europe. Actually one place in Europe thatโ€™s warm then is Gran Canaria https://nomadlist.com/las-palmas-gran-canaria-spain

Or just plain Spain is still nice in Autumn (especially if you donโ€™t like very hot weather). Around mid November the weather starts getting bad, so at that point might want to continue going south.

Did you learn any Thai before staying in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @digitaldiva | 3mo 3 months ago | 0 comments

Iโ€™m curious to know how many people learned some Thai before going there. Learning languages is a hobby of mine but Iโ€™m very put off by how complex the writing system is, and if I decide not to learn it Iโ€™ll probably cross Chiang Mai off my bucket list. I prefer to be at least conversational in a language before I do an extended stay in a country. Iโ€™m curious how people who learned no Thai did getting by. And Iโ€™m curious, from people who did learn some, if itโ€™s any easier than it seems? Thanks!

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Which places in South East Asia are suitable for kids?

by @nomad4 | 1yr 1 year ago | 3 comments

Hi everybody,

weโ€™re a family of 4 from Canada (Quebec province) leaving to Thailand on December 1st.
Our plan is to take things slowly and live in a peaceful environment while working a little and doing homeschooling to our 6-year-old son (plus escaping Canadian-cold winter )

This is roughly what our plan would look like:

  • arriving in Bangkok, staying there for about a week (air bnb probably)
  • moving to Chiang Mai then Krabi (most likely Ao Nang, Ao Tha Lane, Railay) or Koh Pha Ngan (North part) or Koh Chang (2-3 months)
  • then Indonesia (Bali/Gili islands) (1,5 months)
  • And Malaysia (Batu Ferengi, Penang) to finish (1 month)

Weโ€™re not city dwellers, and love being surrounded by nature.
Knowing that, what would be the best places for a family who want something quiet, walkable and with reliable Internet service?

Thanks!
Magali and Guillaume

Ho Chi Minh City, Chiang Mai or Bali for Jun-Jul-Aug for work?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @chelocoach | 3yr 2 years ago | 8 comments

Hi experienced nomads!

Iโ€™ve been nomading around SE Asia, HK and China for the last 4 to 5 months. Iโ€™ve been moving a lot and now I need to settle down for 3 months to finish some work. So the idea is to be in a stimulating city where I can find nomads, start-ups, self growth, self improvement, spirituality environments.
I already been for one month in Chiang mai, and liked it a lot in this respect, but wanted to try somewhere new, so was thinking to go to Ho Chi Minh or Bali. As I will be working mainly most of the time, the idea is not to spend much this three months, so my idea is to spend around 1200usd per month.

Would appreciate any opinions on this.

Best place to sit down and work for three months on a 1200usd budget a month?

Thnx

Places in Central or South America with a beach for remote working

by @mcdime | 3yr 2 years ago | 5 comments

Im looking to make my first venture into nomad living this September and keep leaning back towards Bocas del Toro.

Does anyone have experience setting up shop there? Iโ€™m open to other warm weather surf towns as well

Starting a SaaS company that assists the operation of service based industries so being near some other SaaS people would be wonderful. (First time starting a tech company)

What are good places near Cancun?

Is there a place close to Cancun such as Playa Del Carmen or Talum where I can stay for 1-3 months? Any recommendations? Or is that not a good place for a long term stay?

I love the beach there when I visited there, I thought it would be nice to be able to live by the beach and work for a little while.

Has anyone done the Non O Ed Visa in Hand to Hand Combat in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @artofbryce | 3yr 3 years ago | 4 comments

Weโ€™re headed to Chiang Mai in July looking at our options for visas and came across this: http://www.cmlocals.com/1-year-ed-visa-hand-to-hand-combat/

Has anyone done it?

It looks amazing and beneficial for many reasons, but Iโ€™m a little skeptical without being able to read external reviews or hear of experiences from people whoโ€™ve successfully done it.

Thoughts and other options are appreciated!

p.s. right now we have a one-way ticket and are wanting to keep our options open to stay longer if we love it (which weโ€™re anticipating)

Bali vs. Chiang Mai for digital nomads?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @snu6ew | 3yr 3 years ago | 16 comments

My girlfriend and I started our DN life this March and went straight to Chiang Mai because of itโ€™s ease of living. We love it. CM is great โ€“ we got a scooter for 2700 THB, a nice apartment for 8000 THB all in, we get our laundry done for 50 THB, eat out at nice places every day for less than 100 THB etc. Arriving here needed nearly no preparation โ€“ it just worked out all by itself.

We are still on tight budget and donโ€™t want to give up much of CMโ€™s quality of life but we want to see other places and we are now thinking about what could be our next destination. We are not really willing and able to spend more than what we spend now. Bali seems to be a good place according to what you all wrote.

How does it compare to Chiang Mai or Thailand in general?
CM can get very hot and we often acknowledge that we should have chosen an apartment with a pool here. Can I rent something in Bali for a few months with a pool for less than 250 USD?

Are there any Nomad-houses or similar projects at the moment that make it easy to connect to other people?

We donโ€™t really hang out in co-working spaces, more in cafรฉs. We source products in China and sell them to customers in Europe through e-commerce.

Any tips or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Best places for local, organic food and strong internet outside of South East Asia?

by @jmacattak | 4yr 3 years ago | 8 comments

Where can I find locally sourced, organic (or at least non-GMO) and also be able to work with strong internet?
I did a search but didnโ€™t find much info. We love Bali and the food here is amazing, we are just looking to try somewhere else out (preferably somewhere in Europe) after a long time in Asia. We also loved the Northern Rivers area in Australia and want to find similar food offerings and compare our options!

How is Chiang Mai's air quality?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @albyantoniazzi | 4yr 3 years ago | 9 comments

Hello everyone!
Iโ€™m currently touring South East Asia and Iโ€™m now in Koh Lanta (Thailand). I was planning to visit Chiang Mai on friday, but Iโ€™ve read the air quality in this period is so bad due to fires that are using as a method of cultivating crops there in the north. Is it something to take in consideration or just nothing to care about?
Thanks in advance!
And by the way, if anybody is in Chiang Mai and would like to grab a coffee would also be cool!
