What is your favorite tool, app or product for nomads?

by @tkrunning | 5yr  | 12 comments

Occasionally I discover some really great tools that make life as a digital nomad orders of magnitude easier or better. Some of the ones Iโ€™ve found include:

So what products, services, tools, websites or apps have you discovered that have made your life easier or better?

Sealable ziploc bags. Theyโ€™re a great way to store things. We use them all the time to ensure herb/spice bottles and fluids donโ€™t leak in our suitcases. Theyโ€™re also usually smaller than the packaging things originally come in. For example we carry healthy cereal for our 1-year-old pretty much everywhere. I wouldnโ€™t want to carry around the box or un-sealable bag it comes in.

I use Skype, Evernote, Google Drive and MyConversionBrain, which is a definite must-have for our lead management and content automation tasks. Not too much of a techie but this software helps me big time in hitting my lead and marketing goals, even while traveling. Oh, Podio and Meldium too. Thereโ€™s actually plenty of them but these are the essential ones.

  • Dropbox AND Google Drive
  • Fotor app: edit your pics from your phone

www.kayak.com/direct - so you can find which airlines fly into which cities directly (without stops). Use it a lot.

www.rome2rio.com - so I can plan trips and how to get places where planes donโ€™t fly.

This is a distinctly low-tech response, but I find my bagful of small bulldog clips to be extremely useful. They have a million (OK, maybe only a thousand) different uses.

Hi @kathrynoh, would you be able to elaborate on the minipresso? I took a look and quite like the idea of portal espressos. From the initial reading Iโ€™ve done the trick with the minipresso seems to be that you need to get the grind right. Do you also have a travel grinder of some sort?

What is the best way to approach Taiwan?

in Taiwan by @zoxel | 6mo 5 months ago | 4 comments

We have never been in Taiwan (a couple of travelers) and I am just wondering is possible to find there some quite clean place to hang for a while? How it is better to start? Are there any websiteโ€™s for short and long term rentals? It looks like AirBnB is not that popular there. So it seems that usual tactics - rent hotel or airbnb for short term and then look for long term just driving around might not work. It looks like everything there in Chinese - so if there are any tips how to overcome this - that is more then welcome  Overall just interested in any suggestion - where best to go first? Also is it hard to extend your stay there - we are digital nomads - so working for some company overseas and probably will be extending as a tourist (If we like there).
Sorry for so many questions - but this is really some terra incognita for me

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio | 9mo 8 months ago | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brmolin | 10mo 9 months ago | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari, Italy by @mitch_dina | 10mo 10 months ago | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

What's the best mobile-data option in New Zealand for nomads?

Hi All! Iโ€™ve heard Spark and Vodafone are the best. I plan to move around, so I care mostly about having good coverage, and all Iโ€™ll need is around 1 GB of data or so.

Any suggestions?

Is Three's 'Go Roam' package any good for British nomads?

by @alexnapierholland | 2yr 1 year ago | 2 comments

Hey, Three in the UK offer a โ€˜Go Roamโ€™ package that - at first glance - looks good for nomads.

It essentially promises data use abroad, up to 12GB,

Iโ€™d link to Threeโ€™s FAQ for Go Roam, but as Iโ€™m a new user I canโ€™t.

Bali/Indonesia and Australia are both included, which are top destinations for me.

Thailand is not, which may be annoying.

I could do with a new iPhone before I leave for Bali again in January and as Iโ€™ve been launching a new business, am a bit short on cash.

Unsure if this is a good solution, or if it makes more sense to sit-it-out on my iPhone 6 until I can buy an iPhone XS Max with cash and stick whatever SIM I want in it.

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 | 2yr 2 years ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Favorite towns in Mexico (and near it)?

in Mexico by @azurio | 3yr 3 years ago | 5 comments

Hey guys!

We love Mexico. Weโ€™re excited to find outstanding towns to live in for 2-12 months at a time. Weโ€™re also open to Central American gems.

We especially appreciate learning about those smaller towns that are lesser known but amazing. Personal favorites!

Here are some of our interests:

  • a paradise vibe: ocean, lush greenery, vibrant arts, and/or old town charm
  • at least 3 Mbps download speed
  • great cost of living
  • considerable expat and retiree crowd
  • not too much of an urban city โ€” though a smaller town outside a city can work
  • a bit touristy is okay

Here are lesser-discussed towns that caught our eye โ€” weโ€™d love impressions of these and more that come to mind:

  • Huatulco
  • Ixtapa
  • Guanajuato
  • And more?

Thanks so much, guys!

Where is the best place to live in London for digital nomads?

in London, United Kingdom by @nicholasdnewell | 3yr 3 years ago | 35 comments

Iโ€™m moving to London for a year and would like to know where Iโ€™ll have the best โ€œaccessโ€ to other digital nomads as well as facilities such as coworking spaces. If possible (I know itโ€™s asking a lot for London), Iโ€™d prefer to live somewhere cheap (a relative term I know, but Iโ€™m looking to spend no more than ยฃ1,000), but still have the aforementioned items. Any help, guidance, or just simple insider advice would be much appreciated! Thank you =)
