What Are The Safest Neighborhoods To Live in Cape Town?

in Cape Town , South Africa by @justinbosco 7yr  | 3 comments

Hi all! My girlfriend and I would like to spend a month in Cape Town in August and are researching the safest neighborhoods to live in. Weโ€™d like to get an Airbnb but weโ€™re curious if anyone has any advice on where we should be looking? Weโ€™ve read a lot about Cape Town in our research, both good and bad. Any tips from people who have experience living in the city beyond a weekend resort stay would be great!

Hereโ€™s a map I modified for a friend who was planning to do a medical residency there. We lived there for two years and know most of the neighborhoods well. Crime in Cape Town is mostly opportunistic, so donโ€™t walk around with a camera around your neck, leave stuff in the car or your iPhone on a cafe table, etc.

If you want to message me a few possible locations Iโ€™d be happy to a let you know if itโ€™s safe. Some areas on the map arenโ€™t exactly unsafe - such as the city bowl, downtown can be somewhat unsafe at night, but youโ€™d probably be a few stories up from street level and thatโ€™s perfectly safe. Oranjezicht, Vreadehoek, and Tamboerskloof are also OK in the city bowl.

Greenpoint is also a great location. Close to the sea, in the city bowl as it gets called - basically walking distance to all the good stuff and plenty AirBnBโ€™s around there.

Have fun, its a great place. If you hire a car make sure not to leave valuables in it and be sure to put valuable things in the in the trunk when driving.

My wife and I are in Cape Town right now and weโ€™ve stayed in two different neighborhoods: Woodstock and Tamboerskloof. Of the two I would say Tamboerskloof feels safer to walk around at night. It is definitely a wealthier neighborhood. At the same time, a previous guest at the AirBnb we are staying at in Tamboerskloof had the flat broken into and their laptop stolen, so one should be vigilant and security-minded anywhere. Our Woodstock flat was in a somewhat dodgy area but was a fantastic place to stay.

Woodstock is a gentrifying neighborhood with a lot of cool stuff (coworking, cafes, shops), but most of that is closed at night. If you want to be a little further out of the city, I think the next neighborhood out from Woodstock, Observatory (Obs or Obz for short) had a less sketchy feel and a number of restaurants, cafes and bars.

If you want to be closer to the beach (maybe not in August), Sea Point seemed alright the couple of times weโ€™ve visited.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Any tips for nomad'ing from Tanzania to South Africa?

in South Africa by @tylertringas 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi nomads! Iโ€™m headed to Tanzania in mid-July and working my way down to Cape Town over about 2.5 months. Itโ€™s my first time in the region. Any tips or warnings for typical nomad concerns in Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique and South Africa?

Iโ€™m anticipating worse than usual wifi speed but any tips on connectivity would be great.

What are the best sites or strategies for accommodation? I usually use Airbnb, hostelworld or booking.com and target guesthouses in the $50/night or cheaper range. Is that realistic?

Most importantly what should we do?! Iโ€™ve already research the obvious highlights: Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar, Victoria Falls, etc. Any off the beaten path things to do and/or good spots to post up for a few weeks and enjoy/work?

Thanks

Any recommendation on accommodations in Cape Town?

in Cape Town , South Africa by @danielletom 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hey guys,

Iโ€™m looking at heading to Cape Town in February/March. I am looking for a long term accomodation for about three months. I checked out GumTree and StayinCapeTown, but I was wondering if you had any more reccomendations on where to look! Airbnb is quite expensive and sparse.

Also, I would love to know your favourite areas in the city and hear about your experiences

Thanks !

What are the best Lisbon neighborhoods to live in?

in Lisbon , Portugal by @thefakekozy 7yr 7 years ago  | 12 comments

Hello friends

Moving to Lisbon with my gf for some slow nomadism in November '16 and could really use some recommendations as to where to set up a longer term residence! I just finished about 9 months in Brasil (Portuguese is still basic, but getting better everyday) and 10 months in Australia before that. Iโ€™ve applied for the residency visa so I wonโ€™t get the boot after 90 days like most US citizens in the Schengen zone.

Looking for something somewhat trendy, with good places to eat and near public transit. Would love to keep rent under $800/month for 1bd place, but can go up to $1000. Iโ€™ve heard about Santos and Alcantara from another nomadic blog, but would appreciate any insight on favorite hoods/locations and generally getting around Lisbon.

Cheers,
Kozy

Any other outdoor enthusiasts / adventurers like to meet up? (Central America & South Africa)

in South Africa by @jakegibson 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Till November I have a house in Costa Rica with extra beds. Learning to surf but interested doing some climbing, rafting, hiking.

After November mostly likely Cape Town South Africa for a few months, getting my pilots license but also interested in motorcycle tours, surfing, anything else outdoors.

After that will be looking for a sailing adventureโ€ฆ

I already watch meetup, but am always looking outdoor enthusiasts who are up for more than the casual hike. Anyone in those areas want to plan something? Or do you have a site besides meetup you use?

Anyone interested to do a Scotland/Cape Town flat swap in 2016?

in Cape Town , South Africa by @susangaigher 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi there! I have a one-bedroom flat in Cape Town, South Africa where I am based most of the time. I like to go on 2/3-month trips while working remotely, and am keen to go to Scotland (prefer Edinburgh) next.

I work for myself so am very flexible. If you are keen to swap flats, contact me! Cape Town is amazing, youโ€™ll have a ball. You can even have my friends for the duration of your stay

How is Cape Town for digital nomads?
