Hi All! I’ve heard Spark and Vodafone are the best. I plan to move around, so I care mostly about having good coverage, and all I’ll need is around 1 GB of data or so.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Either Spark or Vodafone will be okay. The smaller networks share the two bigger networks cell towers too, so you may get better cost savings there. If you travel overseas more often I would recommend Vodafone as their roaming data is a lot faster than Sparks and for a better price.
Hey there nomads !
We’ll be in Auckland from january the 11th till the 14th and we wonder where are the best place nomads go to work (and have a beer).
Thanks !
I worked in The Ice House. Decent place, you can see my review here:
https://www.coworker.com/new-zealand/auckland/the-icehouse
I’ll be spending ~6 weeks in south island New Zealand. I’m wondering where to be based. I’ve spent several days in Christchurch, and it seemed like the most boring city in the world (nhf). Other logical choice is Queenstown, albeit a bit expensive (I see there’s a coworking space there). I see there’s other towns on the map, but I’m wondering if I’m gonna find a community in any of them? I’d hate having to work from home.
Yes the community down in Queenstown is pretty good. A decent amount of entrepreneurial types, and also a TEDx community too.
I am a fan of Nelson. Small but has nice beach, is close to Abel Tasman and Golden Bay, not to mention Marlborough Sounds and Marlborough Wine Country. Bridge Street is a nice little co-working spot in the back of a coffee shop. Not sure about 6 weeks but had a pleasant week stay there last summer and might be back in February. Free House Pub is also a good place to work in the afternoons Wanaka might be worth a look as well - have spent a little time there and might go there instead this year. Smaller than Queenstown with beautiful lake and lots of hiking near by. I heard there is a new co-working spot there as well.
wow, wanaka looks awesome, so does nelson. how do you plan on finding accommodation?
I’ve had good luck with Air BnB in Nelson. For Wanaka, I was there with friends last time so we had a larger unit. I don’t think it has as many options though.
So… Trump is Prez. The world looks to the US as a role model. He doesn’t think Climate Change is real. We’re [email protected]#$ed.
Canadian Citizen here. Was considering Costa Rica for a long term solution, but they won’t deal with the impact as well. We were always fond of NZ and my parents spend at least 3 months of the year there along with knowing some citizens.
Questions:
Thanks!
Common misconception.
One of the failings of the US, in my opinion, is that they don’t look outward to see how other countries are far ahead in specific areas.
Hey, kiwi here. Don’t know all the details about immigration. Know we make have some very silly rules about it, and people are working on it. Something pretty awesome coming out next year is the GIV’s visa through the Edmund Hillary Fellowship. Check it out here;
Just took the Skilled Migrant Test and even though I have experience in my field that is a future growth area AND in an area of long term skills shortage AND assuming I have an offer as I have contacts there, I STILL only get 140 out of the 160 points now required
Edit: Nevermind, I didn’t realize I could get a Work visa before the Permanent Residency which means I can add 50 points for having employment in NZ for 12 months or less
I have been sent a short term contract to do a remote trial for a Canadian company. I am pretty new to the contracting game and in the past I’ve only contracted locally in New Zealand and the most I ever signed was an NDA.
I’m pretty wary of the North American legal system, where people make a living off suing or encouraging people to sue. I hope this will never be the case for me, but I want to be smart and cover myself.
Who are the top local or international insurance companies offering affordable packages for NZ contractors working for NZ and international companies?
Thanks,
Dan
AIG or one of the other big insurers might be your best bet. However, I always found it very expensive dealing with PI across borders.
Thanks @international_man. How expensive was ‘very expensive’?
$5000 (NZD) for $1M in PI insurance.

It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1
