Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

What's the best warm destinations in Europe in the winter?

by @jammingsloth |  | 33 comments

Planning ahead for the winter. I’ll be in Spain in the Fall and want to go someplace warm for the winter in or near Europe, but not Schengen. Was first thinking Cape Town, but the internet is slow and it is very far. Was also thinking:
Israel - but airbnb listings are very pricey.
Morocco?
Turkey - maybe a little chilly.

Any other suggestions?

What are the co-working spaces in Split, Croatia?

in Split, Croatia by @emondpph |  | 19 comments

Hi all,

I am looking for a co-working space in Split, Crotia. There used to a couple of places listed on nomadlist.io but since the recent update they are not there anymore. Does somebody have a place they can recommend me ? I am staying there for 1 month (august).

Thank you

How to handle problems with US Address Verification

by @simplgy |  | 10 comments

I’ve been a Traveling Mailbox member for about a year. My last year’s tax return, all financial institutions, vehicle registration, and driver’s license all reflect this address.

It looks like an apartment address: 75 N Woodward Ave #####, Tallahassee FL.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been having problems.

  1. I requested a voter registration renewal in Florida and it was denied on the grounds that I am using a business address
  2. My bank (Ally) contacted me, saying that my address was a “maildrop” location, and needed to be a physical domicile.

My theory is that this Traveling Mailbox location has been flagged as a maildrop in whatever database these agencies use and will continue to be a problem, so I’m looking for a new strategy.

Questions:

  • What am I supposed to do? I don’t have or want a permanent home.
  • If these agencies object to my address, will the IRS or the California tax board? (audits? residency challenges?)

Some ideas:

  • Use a “next of kin” address for legal reasons, and traveling mailbox as a mailing address. My bank allowed this. I think this means I need to declare residency in the state of my next-of-kin, which is not preferred.
  • Find a smaller mail services provider that is less likely to be flagged as a business/maildrop location (They may be flagged later and I’ll have to change addresses. I’ll miss the digital scanned mail feature. Also, is any mail service legal to use as a residence now?)

@nickdanforth, you had this same problem in Apr 2015, any solutions work well for you?

@nomadicme, sounds like you’ve had the same problem, too.

What can we do about this, folks? Seems like as full-time travellers we should be able to pick any state in the US to be our residence, but banning certain types of addresses is really making it difficult.

How do you find love as a digital nomad?

by @sadokx |  | 35 comments

I’m having trouble trying to create a nice and serious relationship. I’m not saying I want a wife, I just want a committed, supportive and loving relationship. However I’m finding out that, at least in my “expanded” social circle in my home country, not many women have this burning desire of growing as a person, impacting the world through their actions, traveling… basically very few people have big goals and dreams. I guess it’s the stigma of a ‘third-world country’. (Mexico).

I would love someone to travel with, that is as accomplished or even more accomplished that I am, that teaches me stuff as I can teach her, etc. The question is summarized in the title: How do you create a lasting and serious relationship when you’re always traveling, having this crazy idea that you can change the world?

I remember a friend mentioned at a DN meetup that a “dating site for DN” would not work out exactly for the same ‘traveling nature’ of DNs, but now thinking deeply about this, maybe I’m not the only one and such a site might provide some value.

What do you think? Thanks!
