Do I need vaccinations for traveling in Asia?

by @fredrivett |  | 6 comments

I’ve been looking to travel for a few years now, and I’m finally at the point where I’m pretty much ready to get going, hopefully next month.

That said, I’ve not planned ahead well, and it only just occurred to me about vaccinations. I’ve done a bit of research and there are vaccinations available, but I’m unsure how necessary they are.

I plan to chat to my local nurse/doctor before going, but I’m also interested to hear whether most people do vaccinate at all before heading out or not?

In terms of specifics, I’m planning to fly to Japan and then move south, likely hitting up Thailand, Bali, Vietnam etc.

Not expecting any official health advice here, more just personal experience. Any thoughts appreciated :+1:

How do you know you're "ready"?

by @fredrivett |  | 19 comments

So for the last year or so I’ve been thinking of moving to Australia. Now it’s not quite ‘nomadic’, it’s a permanent move to one location to work for a specific country, but it’s similar to what you guys experience a lot.

I’m now at the point where a recruiter is recommending me to companies for roles, so this thing is all of a sudden very real. I’m 24, never lived abroad (although done some travelling, 3 weeks at a time max), single & looking for a job at a digital agency.

I can get a job in the UK, or get a job in Oz (Melbourne). Nothing in me wants the UK except that it’s known. What will I do if I go to Australia and I hate it? How long will it take to make friends? Do I want to spend a couple of years of my life on the other side of the world to everyone I know and love?

For me it seems like if I’m going to do it now is the time. I’m young (ish), single & have no job stopping me.

I just want to know how others have felt in this situation, the decision they made and how it worked out for them.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Fred.

Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac |  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? I’m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: I’ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since it’s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

I’m thinking if it’s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).

How do I become a Front-End developer in 6 months?

by @adsieg01 |  | 17 comments

I’m an aspiring DN and my best chances for getting a job are to continue developing my Front-End skills until I can get a steady stream of income. I’ve never been hired for this kind of work. Before it was just a hobby but now I’m quite serious…any suggestions to go from 0 to employed in 6 months? Also I live in China.

London is a SO beautiful city. The historical center is cute, but also majestic and luxurious. You feel the culture at every step. British people are really kind and welcoming! Plus, more than just one, you can enjoy TWO skylines 😍 so many skyscrapers, nothing beats its collection in Europe.

  • New York City

Having spent a total of two weeks in London on two separate occasions and having lived in NYC for two years, both are among my favorite cities in the world. Londoners are quite internationally and ethnically diverse, and seemingly better educated and more intellectual than New Yorkers in aggregate. The city very clean with a stunning mix of modern and historic architecture, and arguably has Europe's best public transit in terms of signage, availability, cleanliness and general efficiency. • Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a fabulous city - from big city living, to isolated beaches, outlying islands and hikes through mountainous terrain. The big downside is it's EXPENSIVE. You need to have a decent salary to live here - otherwise, it would be tough. Hong Kong island is the most expensive, but more affordable places are possible, the further you are willing to travel. It's quite a transient city, so probably pretty easy to make connections!

Tokyo has so much to offer and so much to do. It is easily overwhelming. Whereas I usually take my first week to explore a place Tokyo’s sights just kept on going. I remember ending up in a hidden cocktail bar, a mexican rooftop party with 1 meter margaritas, spending a whole day going only to French places(?), visiting a store that only imported 2nd hand hiphop apparel, and throughout it all the best michelin star ramen. It just seemed endless, completely unrelated and incredibly fun. Six wee

  • Canggu

Bali is amazing, but Canggu isn't really that great -- actually there are SO MANY better places, like Uluwatu, Gili Islands or even Ubud that I can't understand the hype. As almost everyone said below, beaches are crappy, roads are terrible, sidewalks are non-existent and having a motorbike is a must. On the other side, food is great and cafes are pretty reasonable with all those incredible bowls. Anyway I wouldn't recommend it for more than a week.
