The city is quite pleasant. There are some good streets to walk. It never feels crowded, except the most touristic areas. Architecture is interesting (but nothing to write home about) in a small touristic area, outside of it it's mostly ugly Soviet-era apartment blocks and ramshackle small houses. I really liked Chiang Mai but I can't put my finger on why. I'll try to remain unbiased so here goes. Chiang Mai is a dirty place with horrible pollution levels. English speaking is okay. I did really enjoy a balance of simple, risk-free living at low cost and acceptable quality of living. Many places only accept cash but plenty accept card. Bangkok is a really nice city. I lived 2 weeks in Bangkok and it was a good trip ! People are very nice, smiling and the cost is affordable. Some beautifuls temple, gardens, market etc. Chinatown is a place to visit, and Bangkok is globally clean !

Wonderful city, but for Europeans it might be shocking how low the walkability actually is. Everything is spread out far, and the city is beautiful, but the cars are definitely number one priority in the (rather young) Citys Architecture. Yandex taxi or busses will get you around pretty well. In winter you'll spend most of your time in cafes and work from there. I have to disagree with the suggested "best coffee" place. I've been in Phuket for about a month now. Most of that time I've spent in Ka Ron and Kata beach area, but also have been to Chalong, Pa Tong, Rawai, and Kathu.
