What's your system for finding places on Airbnb?

by @kathrynoh |  | 51 comments

Since I started travelling 6 months ago, Iโ€™ve used Airbnb a lot to find apartments. Iโ€™ve had some great experiences but enough bad ones to start wondering about the whole system. Arriving at places to find they are nothing like described, even when they have scores of glowing reviews is not good.

Even though Airbnb have done all in their power to help out when Iโ€™ve had issues, Iโ€™d rather avoid these situations in the first place. I want to arrive at a place to find itโ€™s what Iโ€™ve paid for so I can get to work rather than spend time resolving issues.

Do other people have any system for finding places on Airbnb? Do you use recommendations, send the hosts a checklist or have any other methods? Or do you just not care so long as you have a roof over your head?

What's the best SIM/WiFi package with coverage in entire Europe?

by @stretford_dogs |  | 7 comments

Currently with Orange Spain but looking to dump them and move to an EU wide sim - one I can use ideally for phone calls around the world as well? Also, any recommendations for WiFi on the move. Was looking at Open Sky recently - itโ€™s for on the move in a campervan http://www.opensky-europe.eu/

Any nomad-specific gadgets that youโ€™d get someone for Christmas or use to make your iife/location independent business more easy?

You can have MGTS landline internet 500mbps for $10/mo. Only swiss products in groceries, no EU due to current sanctions. Really cheap life, if you are rich i'd recommend AzbukaVkusa groceries. A lot of expensive restaurants.

  • Saint Petersburg

Doesn't matter what you're interested in, Saint Petersburg has it. It's the largest "small" city in Europe. Such a large population, but everything you want in nightlife and action is packed into several districts. Best city in Europe for nightlife. Not sure why nomadlist has "safety" as a con because it's safer than any western europe city and every american city. Cheaper than Thailand, but winter is COLD.

Didn't like this city that much. Been there twice and honestly it has nothing so special. Just the DUOMO in the center is the main great scenery but besides that, nothing in particular to bother for.

  • Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a fabulous city - from big city living, to isolated beaches, outlying islands and hikes through mountainous terrain. The big downside is it's EXPENSIVE. You need to have a decent salary to live here - otherwise, it would be tough. Hong Kong island is the most expensive, but more affordable places are possible, the further you are willing to travel. It's quite a transient city, so probably pretty easy to make connections!

  • Madrid

Initially I didn't like Madrid. People don't speak english well and people seem very dry. After spending a month there, my opinion changed. People in Madrid are more formal and it reminds me of the wrong impression people get of Parisians. The dining scene is very developed with a ton of options. The only complaint I have had over the years with Madrid is how late people eat. It's truly absurd and I hope COVID might help to change that for good. Centro is a great area to stay and everything is w

Been living here in Buenos Aires for almost three years. Right now, it's (relatively) cheap. I mean, it isn't for the people who currently lives here but it's if you're a foreign, as the inflation keeps going on the peso isn't that worthy now. But, as I'm saying, if you come with dollars is going to make a huge difference. (3 years ago: 20 pesos= 1 USD. June 2020: 95 pesos= 1 USD. and if you're selling dollars in the informal market they will pay you $124. and with that you can buy two small

My girlfriend and I lived in Belgrade for over a month and absolutely loved it! It has a bit of a raw feeling and the indoor smoking is something that's hard to get used to, but in general we felt welcomed with open arms with pretty much everyone we've been in contact with. We were particularly fond of the Dorcol region to stay, eat and live. The castle area is great for a walk on a sunny day. Also relevant in pandemic times: the food delivery is amazing (we mostly used Wolt).

  • Sofia

Sofia is a small city and it is very polluted. In fact it is one of the most polluted cities in Europe. The restaurants and bars are ok. For the rest there is not a lot to do. After a couple of days you have seen it all. The people are ok but Sofia misses an international vibe. Lets be honest here, you mostly get where you pay for.

  • Buenos Aires

Been living here in Buenos Aires for almost three years. Right now, it's (relatively) cheap. I mean, it isn't for the people who currently lives here but it's if you're a foreign, as the inflation keeps going on the peso isn't that worthy now. But, as I'm saying, if you come with dollars is going to make a huge difference. (3 years ago: 20 pesos= 1 USD. June 2020: 95 pesos= 1 USD. and if you're selling dollars in the informal market they will pay you $124. and with that you can buy two small

  • Seoul

Seoul is an amazing experience. Even though it's a massive city, it's thoroughly Korean rather than cosmopolitan and overflowing with authentic local culture. It's extremely clean, modern and futuristic with neon lights and flashing screens everywhere. The modern architecture in this city is impressive and beautiful. It wouldn't take much to convince yourself that you've travelled 100 years into the future. The food is amazing and you have to try Korean barbecue at least once if you visit this

  • Belgrade

My girlfriend and I lived in Belgrade for over a month and absolutely loved it! It has a bit of a raw feeling and the indoor smoking is something that's hard to get used to, but in general we felt welcomed with open arms with pretty much everyone we've been in contact with. We were particularly fond of the Dorcol region to stay, eat and live. The castle area is great for a walk on a sunny day. Also relevant in pandemic times: the food delivery is amazing (we mostly used Wolt).

Rome has tourist fatigue. Servers are curt and it's hard to find a decent restaurant.
