I really enjoyed my first week here, but as I got to know more locals and heard their stories, I was disturbed at the security situation. Almost everyone I met has horror stories about being robbed at gunpoint, robbed by the police, and in one case even drugged and robbed by a taxi driver. It's not even safe to walk a short distance at night (locals told me to just take Uber). Beyond the security issues, scams also abound, and the covid policy is wacky, with hand sanitizer being forced on you ev

  • Istanbul

Istanbul was a terrible experience for me, and in more ways than one. 99% of people do not speak a single word of English, which makes every interaction exhausting. It does not help that Turkish people are short-tempered and get frustrated pretty quickly. Ubers are annoying, they keep canceling on you and it makes going somewhere such a hassle. Regular taxis are notorious for being scammers. Even an Uber driver tried to scam me by asking me to pay by cash even though I was already paying by

Pros - Friendly locals, easy to make friends. Go to a bar and chat with whoever. You'll become friends quickly. - Coffee and tea shops everywhere with good prices - Internet is pretty fast in my experience - I never got foreigner pricing, unlike other reviewers - Good prices if you're bringing in outside currency - Younger people speak English, older people don't, but you should be attempting Turkish anyway :) - Never felt any kind of racism(Korean) Cons - Smoking everywhere. My partner and I moved here last year and we really enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle. English is the first language and 300 days of the sun and like for Europe it's relatively low-cost lof of living. We made a guide for anyone who wants to move here. You can read all about it in my better-looking blog at movinmalta . The whole website has a lot of pointers and tips on how to navigate your life around the island :)

  • Athens

I am a Greek living abroad just the last couple of years. I accidentally discovered this page and noticed the comments below. What I can recommend to people considering living in Athens is to explore places a bit outside of the city center. I agree with people that there are many areas very close to the city center that are dirty and perhaps not very safe to walk around at night. Explore areas like Glyfada, Voula, Kifisia, Marousi, Psychiko, Marousi and you will be amazed with how different it i

Visited in February of 2019, the week before Carnival. Great time to visit as there were hardly any tourists and only a few other travelers. Downside is a lot of the restaurants aren't open and some tours are shut down. Upside is you get to live like a local in a insanely touristy town 10 months of the year. We were able to grab a very nice 1 bedroom apartment in the old town center with a kitchen for 150 euros for 5 nights (30 euros/n). Probably 10-15 restaurants were open in the old town, incl

i stayed in BA for a few months and it firmly wasn't for me. It's a beautiful city and comically cheap for the quality of food / goods / services. People are rude and accomodation is pretty bad. Plus with the inflation of the dollar to peso (3x the buying power for foreigners) it was getting dangerous when I left. (I think someone tried to kill the vice president last week) Excellent to visit, not great to live.

Itยดs difficult to make friends here. Generally speaking, lifelong friends are made in school and then thereยดs family. People are very nice and sociable but forget about making friends. Lots of really bad restaurants (tourist traps) so you have to be careful where you go. Iยดve lived here for two years so I have gotten to know some good places. Tons of tourists and overcroweded public transport. Yes, itยดs a beautiful city but quite unlivable.

Please donโ€™t come. Rent has doubled in price in a matter of 5yrs. Myself and other locals are being pushed out of the city and forced to move to places that are +1h commute from work. "Off the record, however, they told of an island held in the iron grip of a mafia family, who demanded protection money, controlled the local police force and were not above attacking or burning down the homes and businesses of people that crossed them" I don't think Koh Tao is dangerous in terms of absolute risk. Many tourists pass through, and not that many got murdered (under a dozen over several years, as far as I know, some cases might really be suicide). Riding a motorbike anywhere in Tha
