Can anyone recommend a good accommodation website for Chiang Mai?
I’m curious to know how many people learned some Thai before going there. Learning languages is a hobby of mine but I’m very put off by how complex the writing system is, and if I decide not to learn it I’ll probably cross Chiang Mai off my bucket list. I prefer to be at least conversational in a language before I do an extended stay in a country. I’m curious how people who learned no Thai did getting by. And I’m curious, from people who did learn some, if it’s any easier than it seems? Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Chiang Mai and will be here for Christmas. Maybe for NYE too. Planning to go out and meet people and enjoy the holiday season. Any events or places to recommend?
I’d love to meet new friends too. Leave me a message if you are interested in hanging out.
Cheers!
Hi experienced nomads!
I’ve been nomading around SE Asia, HK and China for the last 4 to 5 months. I’ve been moving a lot and now I need to settle down for 3 months to finish some work. So the idea is to be in a stimulating city where I can find nomads, start-ups, self growth, self improvement, spirituality environments.
I already been for one month in Chiang mai, and liked it a lot in this respect, but wanted to try somewhere new, so was thinking to go to Ho Chi Minh or Bali. As I will be working mainly most of the time, the idea is not to spend much this three months, so my idea is to spend around 1200usd per month.
Would appreciate any opinions on this.
Best place to sit down and work for three months on a 1200usd budget a month?
Thnx
Maybe you should consider Danang…
Sounds like a job for chiang Mai!
Bali is too chilled for me, hochimin too hectic.
That’s what I’ve heard, but I’m deciding for HCMC, because I’ve been to Chiang mai already, and since I’m not traveling for 3 months I would like to experience some new place.
Thnx for the comment
Been to Da Nang for a month already. Nice city. But not much going on yet. Maybe. In a year or two this may become a popular nomad spot, but for now I’m looking for something more stimulating.
Thnx for the comment
I live in Ubud Bali. $1200 will work, depending on how much you spend on rent. It’s easy to live here cheaply if you eat cheap local food and not inflated western prices. It’s not exactly a stimulating ‘city’ though - we’re in the jungle here
Hahaha yes I’ve heard about Bali being a more chilled relaxed vibe.
Also had another concern about Bali. I’ve heard if you want to live next to the beach it’s expensive. Do you know how expensive?
Rents are as varied as the accommodation available. There are co-working spaces too, they might be able to help you find a place. FB groups are the best place to find accommodation. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1380848555535084/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/746999628699757/?ref=br_rs
Totally depends on what you’re looking for. I think South Bali is about the worst place a person can spend time. The pollution is awful. East Bali (in the off season) is great. Might be too chill for some. But I stayed outside Candidasa for a few weeks and really enjoyed it. Ubud has a good co-work space called Hubud. And has a decent density ratio.
When I go back however, I will go straight to Lombok (south - outside of Kuta) and work and then ferry over to Gili Air for diving. (Beaches are great in South Lombok too).
Totally depends on what you’re looking for. I just got to Vietnam from Indonesia so all the places are fresh.
Hello,
I am moving to Chiang Man for two months and am looking for a good Muy Thai gym. I have some previous training experience but am at the novice/intermediate level.
Can anyone who has trained Muy Thai in Chiang Mai recommend a school?
@holeinthehand Good to hear you will be training!
I tried 2 gyms (you will find them both on Google Maps).
Lanna Muay Thai - This place was a cool semi-outdoor gym. Only did 1 session here and it was HARDCORE. They will push you to your absolute physical limits. The schedule only had two classes per day when I was there. 1 class at 6AM and the other in the evening. Wasn’t super convenient for me.
Chiang Mai Muay Thai Gym - This place is in the NorthWest corner of the old city (big square on the map!). It’s indoor with astro-turf floor (fake grass). I trained here regularly and the crew was cool as well. The best part was the convenience. The classes weren’t at a specific time but they were flexible, so your training session would start as soon as you arrived. Kinda like a private session but only ~$9USD per session if I remember correctly.
Hope that helps. Best of luck!
Awesome. Thanks for the info! Will check both of these out. Don’t suppose you can recommend a good motorcycle rental place too?
Hello World!
I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.
I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.
Have you considered Latin America? Interested in your thoughts. I owned a hostel in Bogota, Colombia for a couple years. I hear Medellin is the "hot spot" in Colombia though. Was looking at Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, among others.
We are currently in Antigua, Guatemala and its incredible. Would highly suggest a stay here.
Hey everyone,
Looking for blogs by individuals who document their progress/business in South East Asia - ideally Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos - but also Thailand/Myanmar too.
Thank you,
Haiducci

Finding a condo with pool and gym is possible, but there are not much options available. Better book something in the middle of nature -- rent a motorbike.

There's lots of cool aspects to the city but I hated it when I was there. The city has a problem with British stag parties, so if you look like you're a British male and speak English expect to be treated with disdain (it's fair enough) The Hungarians can just generally be unfriendly, especially bartenders. It's a weird experience waiting to be served while 3 people ignore you. Or buying the same drink and getting charged whatever they want (700-1500

Food is cheap and everywhere, easy to go out and have fun/meet for business. Rent has crept up but still far better value than where I came from. Internet: 36 EUR/month get me 450/40 mbps (cable -> DOCSIS 3.0) Public transport is 2.70 EUR/ticket. No woman I know has said they felt unsafe. Some really odd, xenophobic sounding comments on here. Biggest downsides IMO: service quality at restaurants - not that people are rude, but they don't seem to particular

I find Parisians are actually very patient and warm if you at least attempt to speak French; in my experience, most people who complain that they're rude are the ones making zero effort to speak the language. Expensive though and not very easy to meet other nomads.

The historical center is cute, but also majestic and luxurious. You feel the culture at every step. British people are really kind and welcoming! Plus, more than just one, you can enjoy TWO skylines 😍 so many skyscrapers, nothing beats its collection in Europe.

Some nightclubs are free and yet there is still a lot of people. Great por lgbtq+ community.

Londoners are quite internationally and ethnically diverse, and seemingly better educated and more intellectual than New Yorkers in aggregate. The city very clean with a stunning mix of modern and historic architecture, and arguably has Europe's best public transit in terms of signage, availability, cleanliness and general efficiency. Meanw
